The best birthday present I ever had was the chance to relive an authentic Knight Templar adventure in Malta. There was not a single bored moment. You just have to organize yourself a bit before you get there. We chose a target: a lost treasure and of course it had to be an object of artistic and historical value. For example like Indiana Jones and the Ark of the Covenant.
We prepared a map of the geographic location which is critical on one of these adventures. The setting must be consistent with the adventure. And Malta was the perfect choice.
We adopted a strategy: to find the treasure you need to know the terrain, its people and its history; to enjoy the beaches, customs, cuisine and of course delve into the enigmatic world of the Knights Templar.
Discover Maltas Secrets
Malta is a small coastal paradise located in the south of Italy. Go and discover the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino, where you can enjoy the sunshine on idyllic beaches with dramatic cliffs and rock formations sculpted into the sea that draw images of great natural beauty on the horizon .
There are many reasons for you to visit Malta. Perhaps the megalithic temples attract you or its hundreds of churches. They have interesting courses to improve their English as the Island still keeps much of its heritage as a former British colony. There are so many natural virtues that it has become the Hollywood of the Mediterranean. Movies like "Gladiator", "Agora", "Popeye", "Troy" and "The Count of Monte Cristo" were filmed in these privileged lands.
What surprised me most was the history. Malta was and still is the Island of the Knights Templar. A romantic past that can still be seen in every corner of their palaces, courtyards, gardens ...
A land of legends
Contemplating the fortified cities of Medina, Valletta and Victoria, which were built by and for the knights of the Malta Order, to frighten the Arabs and Turks. They had an invincible defense system based on strong shelters and walls that are still standing today. Not even the bombings of World War II could knock them down.
The Templars, the Knights and guards of the Order of St. John after leaving the Holy Land came to Malta and defended the people from greedy pirates who regularly came to their land to take their people as slaves. Furthermore it was the Templars who created the very first hospitals.
Valletta and the famous Crosses
In Malta everything has historical meaning. For example, La Valletta, which is the capital, takes its name from the founder of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, Jean Parisot de la Valette. This order is known worldwide as the Knights of Malta.
The island was donated to the Order in 1530 by King Carlos V. It benefited early from the effectiveness of these gentlemen who built great palaces, churches, shelters and other noble buildings making the island the main entrance of Western Christendom.
In Valletta, which emerged after theTurkish Great Siege of 1565, you can stroll through the steep streets; enjoy the view of the Grand Harbour from the Upper Barracca Gardens; visit the Fort of St. Elmo, the Hospital of the Knights, the Grand Master Palace and the current seat of government with its brilliant collection of armor. But the building with the most impact will be St. John Cathedral built by the Knights of Malta between 1573 and 1577.
Mdina, City of Silence
After visiting Valletta, I recommend visiting Mdina the ancient walled capital of the Knights. Known as the ¨City of Silence¨ you can walk through the narrow darkened streets to get to the squares that are decorated with religious images.
If you have time, a very attractive stop is the Palazzo Falson, the second oldest building in the walled city. Today it is a museum with interesting art collections, historic customs and curious objects like a striking clock from the Napoleonic era that marks ten hours in our time. But do not leave town without going to enjoy the viewpoint of Bastion Square where you can gaze at the golden dome of St Mary of Mosta. Only St Peter in the Vatican, St. Sophia in Istanbul and Abidjan in the Ivory coast exceed it in size.Read complete article....
