“Definitely sets the benchmark for most hotels on The Palm”

We had the privilege of a stopover here a few years ago with our daughter, and it’s still pretty darn good. The reception area is still as we remembered it with Murano glass sculpture, and this area is also very busy with people checking in/out. In fact, I suspect that there were too many folk in... more

“Not good value for money”

Great hotel, not great value for money. The pros: The exterior and the lobby are amazing. It's really a magical vibe and look. And you get a wow factor upon entering. The water park is free and amazing and saves about £70 per person per day. The cons: Once you get to the (Ocean King) room, ... more

  • Guests at Atlantis, The Palm say: We had the privilege of a stopover here a few years ago with our daughter, and it’s still pretty darn good. The reception area is still as we remembered it with Murano glass sculpture, and this area is also very busy with people checking in/out. In fact, I suspect that there were too many folk in this area, so to reduce congestion, we were whisked through to the VIP check in area behind reception. As we were early to arrive (10am) there were limited rooms ready to check straight into. A noteworthy point here is that you can make use of the waterpark as soon as you have checked in – e.g it would appear you can get use of a temporary card until your room is ready. Initially, we were offered a room with a view over the top of the aquarium, which also gave a side view of the sea and of The Palm. However, the view mostly consisted of roof structure, not really what I thought I had paid for. So we contacted reception and they kindly agreed to re-site us, but not until later on in the day. We made sure to grab our complimentary beach bag (which lets the people at the water park quickly recognise you are resident) and headed out to use the Aquaventure water park facilities. Note that there is a separate entrance to the water park for hotel guests, as opposed to the day trippers. As a Hotel guest you are entitled to free use of beach towels (just scan your watch band). The water park was a lot of fun, and it had expanded in square footage by about a third since our last visit due to a new tower and rides. I’d suggest heading to northern part of “Barracudas” for deck chairs rather than stopping at the first set of deck chairs you come to. The Barracudas area is a bit less frantic and there are newer chairs and more pleasant surroundings. The same can also be said of the new Trident tower area. You can see a copy of the waterpark map online and check this out ahead of time. If you are feeling flush and want added security for any valuables at the water park (less people passing), there are a couple of gated premium deck chair areas, or you can really push the boat out and reserve a cabana for the day. We spent most of our time in the water/on slides and had no need for this. There is also an option to upgrade to a fast pass wrist watch, which gets you through the crowd queues on water slides. There was only one twenty minute wait where I thought we might have gotten use of this fast pass. Most rides were no more than two to five minutes wait. The lazy rivers must be at least a couple of Km long and be aware that most of these will put you through the wringer at some point (unlike the peaceful Disney ones – i.e don’t take a Kindle or an unprotected phone with you on these rides). There are numerous restaurants around the resort, and there are plenty of opportunities to eat/drink. Don’t dismiss Aquaventure as little perk. It really is a major attraction, with a lot of fun and you can easily spend a couple of days on tube rides and it won’t be repetitive. It will definitely burn up calories if you use the towers a lot. I’d recommend leaving your wallet in the hotel (we didn’t) but we found out your Aquaventure watch will capture all your meal/drink/tip costs and push them to your room for your checkout bill when you leave the hotel. There are complimentary buses from the Atlantis (in front of the pool) that run the full length of the bottom of the Aquadventure park. Most useful on the return journey from the park to the hotel. On return to the reception area, we found our newly allocated room had been upgraded and we ended up with an astonishing pool/palm pool view near the very top of the hotel. Good enough to warrant a complimentary box of chocs for the check in receptionist who had sorted this for usl! The night views from our sky high room down the central ‘trunk’ of the palm was surreal. Definitely generated that special ‘wow’ feeling, as it’s all so beautifully lit up at night – a true highlight of our trip was to sit in the balcony sipping a glass or two whilst drinking in the view. The room was spacious and beautifully appointed with all the trimmings you might expect – safe, complimentary water, hair dryer, iron and board, slippers and gown etc definitely the highlight of our trip The Atlantis hotel’s own guest swimming pools are also pretty special, but trying to shoehorn everything else in meant we didn’t get to spend much more than an hour here In terms of eating, we had opted for remaining at the hotel on half board rather than paying for a round trip taxi into the Dubai Walk area (As far as I could gather, if you use the sky train that sits outside the Atlantis you’ll still need a short taxi ride taxi at the far end). So for our first night, we ate at Ayamna (Lebanese) which was excellent, and very filling. On our second night of dinner, we paid the £30 pp upgrade (over and above the Atlantis half board package) to go and visit ‘The Royal’ to sample their buffet next door (This is the BIG sister hotel to the Atlantis). There is a free shuttle bus that runs every 20 mins or so between the two hotels. “The Royal” is on another level altogether. It absolutely dwarfs the Atlantis and is easily the most visible and recognisable building on the whole of The Palm. But since it looks like a bunch of randomly stacked shipping containers, it’s definitely not the prettiest. The foyer area is immense and filled with boutique top brand shops (most of which were devoid of customers). There is a massive pair of fish tanks in reception which are backlit from a pair of 30 feet tall LED screens which change background regularly – so it looks like e.g the fish in front of the screen are swimming on an alien planet, then in the middle of a coral reef etc. The front entrance door has some fiery gas flame balls that burst up out of the water pools on either side of you as you walk through the door. A bit pointless, but definitely memorable! In front of the foyer there is a massive outdoor public bar area, sunken into a pool and in front of that, there’s a spectacular dancing water/light show that runs every 30 mins – well worth staying for a free look. The buffet dinner in The Royal was just completely bonkers excess, with I’d guess 15 different cooking stations – Indian, Chinese, Japanese Arabic, Mexican, Italian, Fish, Steak, Bread, Fruit, Desserts etc etc. an absolutely massive area for a restaurant, more like a full blown shopping mall eating zone. I managed 7 courses of food, and still didn’t get round half of what was available. The waitress got a good tip given how often she had to clear our plates!! Note: arrive Hungry and avoid the potato fries/rice/bread!! In conjunction with the spectacular breakfast, the Aquarium, the absolutely massive fish tank (with 33,000 fish including sharks) and the numerous upmarket shops, bars and restaurants all on site, the Atlantis makes for a very special destination indeed. A trip for a bite to eat at The Royal is also a luxury treat that is hard to beat. The main downside, as with my other Hotel choices in Dubai – you’ll leave with your wallet looking like it’s spent a long weekend in Las Vegas! For us, It also has the minor drawback of being primarily a family resort (we had a pool evacuation due to “floaters” in the pool during our stay – uggh – but not the hotel’s fault) and because it is so darn big, you are much less likely to be recognised/remembered by service staff. Tips: At end of January, Dubai was 25/27 deg C during the day and 18/20 deg C in the evening and this was in the Goldilocks zone for us. Warm enough to swim/sunbathe, cool enough to walk without frying. In terms of Dress code outside the hotel – we didn’t see many signs of a minimum standard – no skirt too short, no top too small, but do keep in mind that this is an arab country where both men and women are traditionally fully covered. If you are heading away from The Palm/The Walk area , it’s looked upon unfavourably if shoulders and anything above the knees are not covered, and this should be considered for visiting a mosque, or for heading downtown to e.g the Burj Khalifa or the Dubai Mall. Whilst I appreciate that the hotels all need to generate income, I’d recommend a visit to duty free on your way out to Dubai. We got a premium bottle of rum on a special for £13 in LHR. This was around the same cost as a nip in one of our hotels. Most hotels provide bottled water to your room free of charge. Also, being in an arabic country, there’s no stigma to drinking water with your evening meal. The whole area of Dubai is extraordinarily safe – no problems going out to the Walk at night, even in the small hours of the morning. This is also one of the cleanest cities you’ll ever visit (aside from the sand if you are very unlucky with the weather/wind). In my considerable holiday travel dealings, I found that many of the best possible prices to this area occur during the winter sales with a large British airline, especially for long haul destinations. A great bargain can be had by booking directly with them (with the protection of a package holiday deal) that most high street travel agents will find hard to match let alone beat.
