We stayed for a week at Lomas del Volcan and absolutely loved it! First and foremost the resort is spotlessly clean and beautifully maintained. The grounds are just breathtaking. We stayed in the deluxe bungalow and we loved the jungle view and it was very private. Our only complaint is the bed was too soft for our liking. The breakfast buffet was awesome with an omelet bar, tons of fresh fruit and the pastries were delicious (yes eat carrot cake for breakfast). We ate at the bar a few nights and the service was great and food was delicious and they were very careful about allergies. We also went into town several nights and it was only a $6 US Uber ride. The pool area was quiet and really enjoyed the warm pool - it was raining quite a bit the week we were there so the warm pool was really appreciated. The nature walk is beautiful and we saw lots of wildlife - coatis, agoutis, toucans, monkeys, tree frogs and iguanas.

On our first Costa Rica adventure we started here at Lomas del Volcan. The location was beautiful but our very well appointed private cabin was a bit uphill and not for the faint of heart. We loved the 100 steps or so workout but you could always ask for a lift by the golf carts or make certain you have a room not up the hill. The breakfast buffet was lovely and the fancier restaurant (same room as breakfast) was lovely but a bit of an unique menu. So our second two dinners were at the more casual place as were our lunches and everything was delicious; from nachos, burgers, and pizzas near the pool to perfectly cooked fish and pastas!! All servers, reception, pool staff, and grounds keepers were so friendly and welcoming. I had time for a lovely, complimentary yoga class before breakfast while there in the most beautiful setting. Saw some amazing creatures as we walked to or from our room: an anteater, a really cool wild turkey (maybe), a monkey in a tree, and some beautiful birds as well. Our first 3 days in this beautiful country was perfection at Lomas as it felt like a 5 star hotel!!!

Awesome place to chill and see the sights. Volcano was not visible but not their fault.

First - Hotel Lomas del Volcan is stunningly beautiful. No question about it. We were there for two nights in March and were constantly in awe of the scenery around us. The highlight of our time there, however, had nothing to do with Hotel Lomas del Volcan. That highlight was a trip to the local coffee and chocolate planation - Northfields. Don't miss it! Why am I awarding a mere 3 stars? Couple of things: - The hotel posts signs *everywhere* - For example: don't do this, make sure you don't do that, this is not allowed, etc. And, almost all the signs were faded print on plastic-covered paper taped up to the walls. In other words, old, well-worn signs that would be more at home in the bathroom stalls of a dive bar. For a high end place like this, I'd expect much better. - You are not allowed to flush toilet paper. Okay, no problem with this because we understood that we were in an area without the proper drainage/infrastructure to handle tp. We've faced this in other countries as well. But, in our cabin bathroom, the receptacle for the toilet paper was a swing-lid plastic can. In other words, you must touch it to dispose of your tp. Yuck. Seriously. - There's not a lot to do unless you want to pay a hefty per-person price for activities. - To be fair, the pools were beautiful and if your plan is pool all day, you'll be fine. Other reviewers have said that walking to town is doable. Technically, sure. But it's a very long trek along the road leading to the hotel -- all of which is hotel property. Yes, we could get to town via rideshare but that's not my point. Once you get to the end of this extremely long driveway (more than a mile, I'd say. Probably not quite 2), you still have a bit of a walk to get to the main part of town. If you have hours of free time and enjoy long treks, go for it. But I would definitely not want to make the trek back at night in the dark. The restaurants were nice. Service in the casual place was so-so at best. Even when they weren't busy. The food in the nicer restaurant was good, not amazing. They leave windows and doors open all the time and there are lots of flies. The biggest complaint we had was that the doors (front and back) to our cabin were not sealed. You could see sunlight all along the bottoms and tops of the doors. It's a feature of their design (you'd have to see them to know what I mean). The sunlight cracks were definitely big enough for bugs and lizards to come in. We tried tucking some of our socks and dirty laundry along the bottoms of the openings in the hopes of keeping critters at bay. Don't use the towels!! There are signs about that! We were lucky, mostly, and were only lightly bothered by bugs but our friends in the neighboring cabin were not so lucky. Our friend picked up her phone overnight to check the time and it was covered with ants. The walk up to our cabin was steep but quick and we liked the exercise. If you're in fair shape, you'll be fine. But if you prefer, you can ask for a golf cart escort. Hotel Lomas del Volcan was gorgeous but I wouldn't go back.
