Rio Perdido is an absolute gem for any family looking to truly "unplug" and immerse themselves in nature without sacrificing comfort. If you’re searching for a place where the pace of life slows down the moment you cross the bridge, this is it.  The Environment & Tranquility The property is set within a massive 1,500-acre private reserve in Guanacaste, and it feels like a world of its own. The "Lost River" (Rio Perdido) itself is the heart of the experience—a natural thermal river where you can find your own little pocket of warm water tucked between canyon walls.  The bungalows are designed to blend seamlessly into the forest. Waking up to the sounds of howler monkeys and tropical birds instead of traffic or notifications is the ultimate way to disconnect. It’s incredibly peaceful; you can spend hours just sitting on your private terrace feeling like you’re the only person for miles.  The Staff & Service What truly elevates the experience is the staff. They are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet—genuinely warm, attentive, and they often remember your name after the very first day. Whether it's the guides leading you through the canyon or the team at the restaurant, there is a sincere sense of hospitality that makes you feel like a guest in a home rather than a number in a hotel.  The Perfect Family "Reset" For a family vacation, it strikes the perfect balance between high-energy adventure and deep relaxation. • For the active side: The ziplining through the white-rock canyon and white-water tubing are world-class and thrilling enough for teenagers and adults alike.  • For the relaxation side: Between the cliffside yoga pods, the volcanic mud treatments at the spa, and the multiple thermal pools, it’s impossible not to relax.  It is the rare kind of place that actually delivers on the promise of tranquility. This hotel was one of the highlights of our trip, and we would absolutely recommend it to friends. We opted to spend a bit more on the newer West Villas, which were excellent—modern, private, and very comfortable. I agree with many of the other reviews: the main lodge is beautiful, the restaurant offered some of the best food we had during our trip, and the multiple pools were all unique and enjoyable. We did the zipline adventure, which was outstanding and a true highlight. We also tried the tubing experience, which unfortunately ended up being a low point—not due to the hotel, but because of the time of year. During the dry season, the water levels are quite low and slow-moving, so much of the time is spent getting stuck and waiting for guides to push the tubes along. We had gone white water rafting the day before, which was a much more exciting and enjoyable experience. If you’re visiting during the dry season, I’d recommend skipping the tubing and prioritizing rafting instead. Overall, our stay at Rio Perdido was fantastic, and we wouldn’t hesitate to return.

Rio Perdido was one of the most special places I have ever vacationed. The thermal river was absolutely amazing. We hiked down a beautiful canyon to get to the river and it was honestly 100° at the mouth of it. We sat on the bottom of the river against rocks and it felt like a whirlpool. The thermal pools were also wonderful, and I truly appreciated the design of the entire layout as it was immersed in nature and was so peaceful. One morning, I attended a complementary yoga class and my walk from our Casita located in the forest jungle across the hanging bridge into the beautiful facility had already put me in a Yoga state of mind. Additionally, the hiking was challenging and really fun and very well marked. We took a Mixology class and a stargazing night adventure which were both so much fun as well as interesting. The staff were kind and friendly, it was an absolute perfect vacation.

This is definitely the place to visit if you are in Costa Rica. To say hotel doesn’t really seem correct, though. It’s more of an experience! There are so many options to choose from at Rio Perdido. I loved the thermal river and we spend days walking the river. I think there could be more signage but then that would ruin the adventure of bouldering / walking through this wonderful thermal spring. We couldn’t believe how secluded it was. We enjoyed the river tubing as well. The yoga class was strenuous and interesting. I wish they expanded their classes to Pilates. The extra class costs were also too costly and I hope that changes. We loved the mixology class with Wesley. We stayed in the east bungalows which are the lowest prices category of rooms. They exceeded our expectations. The beds, housekeeping balcony, showers all were great. The thermal pools are busy but I understand there is a plan to enlarge the space and also built a cold plunge pool. It is really the staff that makes this place fantastic. They really seem to enjoy serving guests. The food and drinks are excellent as many have reported. The costs are in line with excellent hotels in this country. We plan to return December 2026, as we only live 2 hours away, and for that I am grateful!
