“No problems - food was amazing”

Amazing, friendly staff, great food and great beach. Food was so good and anybody who disagreed clearly needs to try food that's not burgers and fries.

I just returned from Royalton Punta Cana, Diamond Club last week (4/6/4/11) with my two kids. I would call this an average resort - not spectacular, but nothing terrible either. First of all, Diamond Club. Unless you upgrade to a swim-out I don't see any advantage to DC status (DC is the only way to get a swim-out room). In past hotels I have been at with a DC upgrade they have included a beach bag upon arrival, strawberries / wine / bottle of liquor, a dedicated pool and pool area, a swim up bar, a la carte breakfast and/or lunch. There is a spot on the beach, but that is readily available; and a walk up bar but the service took just as long as the regular bar and was far away from the pool. Royalton Punta Cana does not offer any of these. Our butler made a few dinner reservations for us, but never met us at a meal, looked for us the pool, etc. I won't mention his name since he wasn't bad, just not impressive either. Overall, the rooms and resort were clean but there was no "wow" factor and many of them needed an upgrade. The staff was helpful, but not nearly as nice as other resorts I have been too. There were a few people walking around offering to bring you a drink, but again... not quite as happy or willing to help as past places I've been. The Vibe team was great, especially Bernard. They kept my teenage sons entertained most days and the Fitness team always had classes going on. Foam party was fantastic. Food at the buffet was good but repetitive. Hunter was the worse meal I've had in a long time - my brisket was so dry, my son's salmon was overcooked, and my other son's prime rib (which I paid extra for) was a slab of fat. Hibatchi was good. We dined at Splash 2x and it was much better on that side of the resort. In short, if you get a great deal on Royalton Punta Cana, by all means jump on it - but just go in aware of the fact that this is what I would call a budget resort.

I checked into this five-star hotel expecting a seamless, luxurious experience—but what I got instead felt more like a polished façade than true quality. At first glance, everything looks the part: an impressive lobby, attentive doormen, and stylish decor. But once you get past the surface, the cracks start to show. The check-in process was surprisingly slow, with staff who were polite but clearly overwhelmed and not particularly detail-oriented. For a hotel of this supposed caliber, that first impression matters—and it fell flat. One of the most frustrating issues was with our booking. We had paid for the Diamond Club, expecting the usual upgrades and added perks that come with it. Instead, we were placed in a standard room with none of the promised benefits. This wasn’t acknowledged at check-in, and it took us three days into our holiday to realise and raise the issue ourselves. When we finally brought it up, the response only added to the frustration. Our butler initially told us the hotel was fully booked, which didn’t make much sense given the circumstances. When we questioned why we were seemingly the only Diamond Club guests not receiving the correct room or privileges, we were simply told it was “business.” The explanation felt dismissive and didn’t reflect the level of service you’d expect at this tier. Only after pushing further were we eventually moved to a more appropriate upgraded room—but by then, a significant portion of the experience we had paid for had already been lost. The room itself, while aesthetically pleasing, wasn’t especially functional. The lighting was oddly dim, making it difficult to work or even relax comfortably. More concerning, the bathroom had serious issues—the shower leaked a huge amount of water into the main bathroom area, turning the floor into a genuine hazard. It often felt like a death trap underfoot, and was accompanied by a lingering damp smell that made the space feel far from clean or comfortable. There was also no bath, and very little consideration for families with younger children. The tiled floors became extremely slippery when wet—more like a slip-and-slide than a safe bathroom space—which made even basic things like washing children unnecessarily stressful. Housekeeping was another major letdown. On one occasion, our room was not cleaned for two full days and was only addressed after I went to reception—again—to raise the issue. This simply shouldn’t happen in a five-star hotel. Turn-down service, which is a basic expectation at this level, was also inconsistent—we only received it twice during our entire stay. Staff interactions were also disappointing. While a few individuals were helpful, others came across as rude and dismissive. On more than one occasion, this was brushed off as a “language barrier,” yet we observed the same staff members comfortably holding conversations in multiple languages with other guests. That inconsistency made the explanation feel more like an excuse than a genuine limitation. Dining was perhaps the biggest letdown. The food was genuinely poor—often tasting like it had been reheated rather than freshly prepared. On more than one occasion, it felt as though dishes were being taken directly from the buffet and repackaged as à la carte meals. For a five-star hotel, this was incredibly disappointing and fell far below expectations in both quality and value. The issues extended beyond the room and dining as well. Towels handed out around the pool were frequently stained, visibly dirty, or simply worn out and in need of replacement—hardly what you expect from a hotel positioning itself at a luxury level. Small details elsewhere were overlooked too: dust on surfaces, a minibar that hadn’t been restocked properly, and toiletries that felt generic rather than premium. The bed was comfortable enough, but not the “best sleep of your life” experience you’d expect at this price point. Service throughout the stay was inconsistent. Some staff members were warm and helpful, while others seemed disengaged, as though guest satisfaction wasn’t a priority. Simple requests took longer than expected, and follow-through was hit or miss. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect was the overall atmosphere. A five-star hotel should feel effortless and refined, but here everything felt slightly forced, as though it was trying too hard to impress without delivering genuine comfort or excellence. In the end, it’s not that the hotel was bad—it just didn’t live up to its five-star promise. For the price, you expect consistency, attention to detail, and a sense of care that simply wasn’t there.
