“Good hotel but room for improvement”

The rooms and service are what you expected from a 4 star hotel. 95 % of the beasts will stay here and think it is a great hotel but I'm in the 5% Wi-Fi connection is diabolical, always dropping out and rarelly auto connects Dinner was ok a bit small and basic. Beer is expensive from local breweries but most bars in the area will sell beer at half the price and twice the quality (I know it's subjective but I know my beer, and the whole group cannot be wrong). It's a shame it could so easily of been a 5

This is a charming hotel beautifully decorated and very clean. It is 100 years old,stylish, and tasteful. The beds are really comfortable and the room 212 was very small. We changed to 217 after one night and this was the same price although much bigger room and bathroom and also have a balcony. There was unfortunate evening noise of thumping disco music on one night of our stay. The other two nights were quiet. The bed was super large and very soft and comfortable with good quality towels and sheets. There was tea and coffee in the kettle, but no fridge . The restaurant food was beautifully presented and stylish in the usual French way. We had dinner on one of our three nights. The choice was a bit limited only four starters and four mains. The breakfast was very good and plentiful -self service top quality food. It was warm and sunny and we ate outside on the wooden Terrace. As with most hotels we find they have a press the button coffee machine which really isn’t all that tasty ! All the staff were friendly and helpful and several receptionist spoke English very well, which was very helpful to us. Nobody wears any uniform so it’s hard to know who is actually working in the restaurant. The parking was easy in a private car park opposite the hotel behind the hedge and also plenty of parking in the road even at the weekend. Some of the local area is a bit down market and this was disappointing, otherwise I would have given five stars .Burger bars, ice cream parlours and children’s roundabout fairground games, et cetera. Surround this lovely hotel .But it’s a short walk to the beach and a lovely area with wide roads and pine trees. Lots of pizzeria and cafés if you don’t want to eat at the hotel. We would definitely stay here again. It’s handy for a returning to St Malo for the ferry home at about 50 mins drive.

The hotel could be really good but there is a feeling of reserve and coldness in the welcome and demeanour towards guests. Check-in time is 16.00 which is at least an hour too late and arriving about 30 minutes before after a long trip to be told room not ready and with no apology or offer of a glass of something nice to make us feel welcome went down badly. We had to walk around for half an hour and come back —not a good start. The room was fine if a little clinical in it’s white starkness—warmer more creative decor would have been more welcoming and tasteful. I have read other reviews praising the breakfast. In our view it was nothing special and for €22 per person is an over priced small buffet. There is no menu or option to order anything other than on display Only hot food was bacon, scrambled eggs and boil your own eggs — poor fruit selection, only cheese available was the runniest smelliest type of cheese, no hard cheese like Emmental. Coffee was from a machine which I think is a cop out by hotels so they don’t have to bother to make it and for the price charged i expect not to have to balance a full cup across the dining floor. If the hotel was run by people who understood the hospitality business then they would have a good product. On the subject of hospitality we paid the night before as we had to leave early and as the restaurant only started breakfast at 07.30 it was too early for us but there was no offer to provide any coffee or croissants etc for us to take with us. Not planning on returning.

The hotel is a lovely building and in a good location with private parking opposite and plenty of street parking. We arrived around 3pm and couldn’t check in until 4 pm - they appeared to check if the room was ready but to be honest, I don’t think they did check and just wanted to reinforce the fact that the terms were 4pm. When we returned at 4pm they at first said the room still wasn’t ready but magically became ready when we complained. The room itself was fine, a good size with balcony, and nice bathroom with robes available. It was maybe a little sparse and had wicker chairs and bedside tables, which were totally unfit for purpose as you couldn’t balance a glass of water on them safely. The room was completely white with only one black and white picture on the wall so the effect was very monochrome and sparse. The breakfast was OK, not the best we have had in France. The egg boiler was not hot enough and our first attempt using the time we would cook them for at home resulted in almost raw eggs. The yogurts weren’t special and the fruit selection very limited. Now, to dinner…..just don’t eat here for dinner! We had booked dinner for the first night after a long day traveling but really wished we hadn’t. Only 4 choices of starter, main and dessert and as a vegetarian that meant 1 main option only which was a buckwheat gnocchi. Well, I got only 4 tiny pieces of gnocchi, swimming in an unknown lake of tasteless sauce with a few totally overcooked vegetables that reminded me of food cooked for weaning a baby….almost puréed. Dreadful. My husband got tough pork again with baby food type carrot purée. Thankfully we didn’t order starters as the desserts were just as awful as the mains. A very expensive mistake to eat here. Just don’t! The hotel is lovely and could be so much better but it needs a change of chef and for the owners to be friendly….they looked worn out and stressed and did not engage in any conversation either in English or French. It reminded us a bit of Fawlty Towers and Basil’s famous comment “what do you think this is….a hotel?!!!”
