After checking into another hotel in Nice and being disappointed by nearly every aspect of the experience, I decided to move to my original choice: Hôtel du Couvent, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Nice. I am very glad I did. This hotel is beautiful. Walking through the front entrance feels like stepping into a luxury oasis hidden within Old Nice. Because the property is located in a fully pedestrian area, guests arriving independently will be dropped at a meeting point outside Old Nice unless a transfer is arranged through the hotel. From there, bell staff meet guests with a buggy and assist with luggage, which adds to the uniqueness of the arrival experience. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed. The bath amenities were exceptional both in fragrance and quality, and the bed was one of the most comfortable I have slept in for quite some time. The overall atmosphere of the hotel feels calm, refined, and intentionally luxurious. I dined at Restaurant du Couvent during my stay and unfortunately found the experience disappointing. Service felt inattentive, and the octopus dish was extremely chewy and lacked flavour. When asked about the meal, I explained the issue, but nothing further was done, which was disappointing considering the standard of the property. My biggest criticism relates to interactions with security. Nearly every time I entered the hotel, I was asked whether I was staying at the property, often by the same security staff member. While I understand the importance of guest safety and discretion at luxury hotels, repeatedly being questioned as a paying guest became uncomfortable and made me feel less welcome over time. Overall, Hôtel du Couvent is an exceptionally beautiful property with impressive rooms, outstanding amenities, and a unique atmosphere. Despite some inconsistent service experiences, I would still consider it one of the more memorable hotels I’ve stayed at in Nice.

“Just for the Spa, you can do better”

I was really excited to try the new Hotel du Convent's thermal spa, as I am a bit of a spa junkie! I had to ask the security where the entrance was as it was not entirely obvious. Set away from the hubbub of the rest of the hotel, I took a secluded staircase to the underground thermal spa. When I arrived the assistance who checked me in did not even offer to explain the spa, she basically gave me the key to the locker and when I looked at her expectantly she asked "do you want me to go with you?" I shouldn't have to say yes. So that was the first negative. 2ndly there wasn't a sign telling guests to shower before entering the pools, which you think might be mandatory. There is an explanation on the website of how you should run through the pools the lukewarm to hotter etc. but I did not see this explanation in the spa. The ambiance was incredible and I felt lucky that people there were quiet and respectful. But the pools didn't really wow. One was warmer than swimming, another was even warmer but not "hot" and then there was a cold plunge as well as a hammam. I almost completely wiped out when I slipped on a wet patch, and after that took off my flip flops that were provided to walk barefoot. It was a bit scary and dangerous, although there were signs saying slippery, I think there could be a better job of keeping areas drier. I sensed this was an issue as I seemed to see towels everywhere, at the entrance to the shower, on the edge of the cold plunge. Bad planning...There was plain cold water and tea available but even that felt a bit minimal (no lemon etc). My other main complaint was the state of the dressing room. It was clear someone had not been in to clean recently as one of the toilets was dirty and some disgusting guest had left their used qtips on the counter (or they could not find a waste basket?). Although the baths were included with a 1 hour massage I would never go back there to use them alone, or pay for them alone. I did not find the experience special enough. There was no sauna and no massages in the pools (aka jet streams etc). It might be nice to be in the water for a bit but as I already mentioned not special enough to be a destination spa.
