Porto San Giorgio in the Marche region of Italy is one of those magical places that hasn’t been overrun by American tourism and that’s exactly why we love it. Not because we don’t like Americans… we are American with family in Porto San Giorgio… but rather because those are the spots where you find much better food/wine at very cheap cost. It’s a lively coastal town with miles of stunning beaches, clear blue water at the perfect temperature, and some of the warmest, most welcoming locals you’ll meet anywhere. I always tell my U.S. friends: if you want great food in Italy at a fraction of the price, go where the Europeans vacation. Porto San Giorgio is a perfect example. In July and August, the town comes alive every night with the Proloco, a massive community food festival that stretches along several miles of lungomare (long beach). Picture miles of food vendor tents, many with al fresco seating under large canopies, serving incredible dishes from across Italy. The food is fresh, authentic, amazing, and incredibly affordable. The town square hosts nightly concerts and entertainment throughout the summer. It’s the kind of place where you can sit for dinner at 10pm, wander out for a gelato at 2am, stumble upon a live band, and end the night dancing on the beach. Every American friend we’ve brought here has been blown away by the charm, authenticity, and slower pace of life. This year we booked our trip a bit late and found that ALL beachfront hotels were already full. Luckily, Hotel Rosa Meublé had a last-minute cancellation and we jumped on it. What a win. The hotel is in a prime location: just across from the beach clubs and bars, and only a 2-minute walk to the town center. While no buildings sit directly on the beach (that space is reserved for beach clubs and restaurants), Rosa Meublé is right on the front line, as close as you can get. We had a clean, comfortable room with a balcony, and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful. Breakfast was included, and the rate, just €120/night, felt like an absolute steal given the location and quality. If you’re visiting, keep in mind that Italian beaches are mostly run by private lidos, so you’ll likely need to rent an umbrella and two chairs for about €18/day. There are designated public areas if you want to lay down your towel, but renting is definitely worth it for comfort and convenience.
