We spent the MOST stunning five nights at Blue Holbox. I can’t recommend this hotel enough!!! The best thing about the spot is its location, slightly east of the main town with a lovely stretch of beach in front of the hotel. It’s a bit quieter than closer to town and doesn’t have any buildup of seaweed. It’s a lovely fifteen minute stroll along the beach to town, so is easily walkable. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. I received useful communication via WhatsApp in the week before our arrival. The hotel arranged our shuttle for us and shared lots of helpful tips about what to do on the island. When our airconditioner briefly started beeping, we whatsapped reception and the issue was resolved immediately. The included breakfast was fresh, delicious and substantial. The bar and restaurant served delicious margaritas, cervezas and ceviche and the service was excellent! The hotel has plenty of chaise lounges with shade along the beach front and a stunning pool set back from the beach out of the heat. Our bungalow looked exactly like the pictures on booking.com. We had a stunning room with a veranda overlooking the powder white sand and sea. The unit is newly built and has a very nice bathroom and well-sized cupboard. The hotel’s layout with white hammocks hanging between the palm trees is so beautiful and tasteful! I honestly cannot recommend this place enough!!!

Such a strange experience. Lovely room(s) - we stayed in a upper floor ocean view room for first night, then in a hut/bungelow for the next three - which were clean, spacious, airy and beautiful; beds were comfy, facilities were decent, shower was great. All good inside. But there were niggly little issues all the way through. For a start, if you come in from the beach (and not the road), the reception is impossible to find: no signs anywhere. And this also is an issue trying to find rooms etc - the place is a bit of a maze, and only saw one room number sign on the whole site. Then the major issue first reared its head: the service/staff. Pretty much appalling throughout the stay. We were greeted as though we were an imposition when we arrived. Not sure if the chap had just had a bad day but was curt and rude, which after a lengthy journey is never the best first impression. We had added an extra day (at the beginning) from the original booking so had requested, weeks before, to have the same room for the entire stay, but understood if not possible. We politely asked again, if there was any way we could avoid moving, and were barked at, dismissively, basically told we would get what we were given and be happy. Was horrendous customer service. We got to our room - the ocean view room - which was stunning. We had asked for an extra bed (for our youngest) but were told she would just have to sleep on cushions on the floor. Again, not the best. When I had the temerity to ask, the next day, whether the other room might be ready for us to move straight into if in any way possible, again I was greeted with a curt dismissal. "Check out time is this, check in time is this. You have to go away and come back." At least they let us leave our bags in reception. Second night in the new bungelow (which was lovely), we got locked out. The wristbands that are your keys didn't work, and we were stuck outside our room. Now the whole place was a mosquito nightmare (not their fault, I realise), but being stuck outside your room at dusk, with absolutely no urgency from the staff to try to help/get us in was very frustrating. Reckon i picked up an additional ten mozzy bites just from standing there waiting for the grumpy receptionist to acknowledge that the key I had already said didn't work, didn't actually work. And 30 mins later, when we had finally got back into the room, there was no "sorry for your inconvenience" or anything, just a "we may need to change that lock tomorrow". This is a lovely location (bit of a walk back into the centre of town, but the best bit of beach and loads of sunbeds), the rooms are great (even had mozzy nets over the beds on the ground floor), the pool was okay (it's very small, but fine to dip in after you've been at the beach all day), and the restaurant was fine (breakfast was very good indeed). But the overwhelming impression left is that the staff don't really want to be there, and certainly don't want to help you.
