We just returned from a week at the Fairmont Mayakoba, and it's safe to say this will be our go-to resort for years to come. From the moment we arrived, the property's natural beauty was breath taking; winding lagoons, lush mangroves, and that unmistakable feeling of being tucked away from the typical Hotel Zone hustle. This is not your average Cancun-style resort; it's quieter, more intentional, and feels like a genuine retreat. We booked a Casita, which came with butler service, something we'd never experienced before and honestly weren't quite sure how to use at first. Our two butlers, Daniel and Rodrigo, completely changed that. They had this incredible way of making us feel comfortable asking for absolutely anything, even when we were hesitant. Over the week, they handled our dinner reservations, booked excursions, kept us stocked with extra snacks and ice, and would swing by in the golf cart whenever we needed a lift across the property. When we wanted to head into 5th Ave in Playa del Carmen, they arranged the transportation without a second thought. One small moment that stuck with me: I was running out of small US bills for tipping and had only larger bills. Since the property is tucked away from big cities is not easy just walking out to an exchange house. So, I asked Rodrigo if he can help with this and within a couple of hours he was at our door with smaller bills. Just one of many small but thoughtful gestures that showed how much they genuinely cared about making our stay easy. By the end of the week, they felt less like staff and more like friends looking out for our family. The food and drinks were outstanding across the board — high quality, with so many options that we genuinely never grew tired of where to eat, and the all-inclusive package is absolutely worth it for the sheer variety alone. The sushi and cocktails at HIX bar were amazing, honestly some of the best we've had at a resort. Dinner on the beach at Fuego was a culinary experience in itself. The setting alone, with the sand underfoot and the ocean as a backdrop, made every course feel like an event, and the food more than lived up to it. And at Gaia, the sliders and ceviche were excellent; honestly, you can't go wrong with the food anywhere on this property. The pools were gorgeous, the grounds were immaculate, and getting around was half the fun — the property has bikes available everywhere, which was perfect for our family. Instead of rushing between spots, we'd cruise along the paths at our own pace, which fit exactly the kind of slow, unplugged vacation we were hoping for. We happened to be there during the World Cup, and the resort had decorated one of the restaurants specifically for watching matches. Catching a Mexico game there, surrounded by other fans, was such a fun and unexpected highlight of the trip. Beyond that, there was no shortage of things to do. We tried tequila tasting, a lagoon boat tour and my wife and our two daughters had an amazing time at the spa. I made the most of the early mornings with multiple workout sessions at their top notch gym, and we capped it all off with the copal ceremony, which was genuinely unforgettable, a really beautiful cultural touch that was very moving. And through all of it, the service was top notch every single staff member we encountered, not just our butlers, made us feel welcomed and taken care of. We're already looking forward to coming back. If you're considering Fairmont Mayakoba, especially with a family, do it! And if you can, request Daniel and Rodrigo as your butlers. They made the trip.
