The Pousada was built over 25 years ago in a part of the 16th century St Philips castle which was built on the orders of Philip II of Spain (later Philip I of Portugal) who employed the Italian military architect, Filipo Terzi. The fortress gives a commanding view across the sea and the surrounding countryside of the Serra da Arrabida, a mountain protecting the bay of Setubal and the mouth of the river Sado. Sao Felipe has a rambling layout on different levels.

“stunning location and a fine converted building”
Set in a stunning location on a hill, next to a castle and church, the converted governor's residence offers comfortable rooms with impressive views around the region. it is also very convenient for the airport in Lisbon/Lisboa -we used it on the way back from the Algarve

“Fantastic location and excellent starting point for hiking in the Arrábida.”
Food and facilities up to the usual high pousada standard. We particularly appreciated the dog-friendly attitude of the very friendly and helpful staff.

The staff while friendly did not appear to be “ with in “ - for example , they invited us in for a complimentary welcome drink an... more

Pousada Mosteiro de Guimaraes, was fantastic, while Conimbriga Hotel Do Paço was abysmal. This one, Pousada Castelo Palmela, was somewhere in-betwe... more
