What an amazing experience we had at this hotel! Highly recommended for anyone to visit! Especially if you have children with special needs! Beautiful hotel & amazing members of staff working here who go above and beyond to make your experience at this hotel so special and memorable. As a mum of an autistic child, going on holiday can be so stressful! It can be like planning a full scale operation. However, the members of staff at this hotel went above and beyond to make our stay the most enjoyable holiday we have probably had. My son has a very rigid diet and this can be very tricky when going on holiday especially to somewhere where I might hint get the same foods he’s used to . The restaurant manageress & the chef went above and beyond to cater for my son’s dietary preferences. They asked what he would like to eat and made him fresh spaghetti bolognaise every evening even when it wasn’t on the menu. My son was absolutely delighted! Also, Simone Aguiar (guest experience ambassador) went above and beyond to deliver excellent guest services. She also managed to get someone for the children’s club who had experience with children with special needs. She checked in on us daily to make sure we were enjoying our stay and if anything else they could do to make our stay more enjoyable. I would highly recommend this hotel. With its beautiful views and stunning location it’s definitely worth a visit! Amazing food choices in the restaurant & plenty of healthy options too. We stayed on the 10 th floor, our room was beautifully decorated and clean & fabulous view of the ocean. The staff are a credit to the hotel and I will definitely come back to stay there again. We’ve been going to Vida Mar for about 9yrs for our winter break and during that time we have seen changes in the hotel. When we first went there was coffee and tea pots served with breakfast and the coffee was excellent this has sadly changed to the constant cues and search for spoons and tea pots. The food of an evening is not great but the best food can be had at the pool bar if you ar prepared to eat out of a night elsewhere(plenty of fab places to eat near by. Sadly the Suchi bar has closed which was an asset to the hotel. The staff are fabulous and cannot help enough. They will go to great lengths to help from different pillows and mattress topper to mirrors for doing hair in bedroom I can’t fault them. Sadly some of the older staff have left for other places but still core staff make this a welcoming hotel. We do miss turndown service especially the chocks they would put on pillows. However we have never returned to an unmade bed or unclean room and our lady who does that is always happy to help if needed. We miss the 5* treatment before the pandemic but this hotel offers fabulous value for money even though it’s a bit tired and now is more 4* you just need to know what your getting is not 5* but4* with very cold swimming pools that feel more like wild swimming. It’s perfectly places between Funchal and Lido so if you like walking rather than bus or taxi it’s a walk most places up or down hill. We are going back again this winter and look forward to seeing the staff who are more like friends now. A holiday is what you make it as long as you know what to expect. We wouldn’t be going back if it was awful.

Positives first - an impressive looking hotel on arrival in a great seafront location, greeted by fabulous staff. Cannot fault the staff at all, from the reception to the waiting on staff. The bedrooms are huge & extremely clean but the bathrooms are dated & have wall to wall mirrors which I’ve never seen the like of in any hotel & never want to again. The shower was poor & was so high up it was barely 2” from the ceiling so by the time the water got to you it was weak & I’m 5’ 7”. There are no plug sockets near a mirror at all so it’s near impossible to straighten your hair & the ‘shaver only’ plug in the bathroom isn’t suitable for other appliances. The biggest down side for us was the pool area. Large pools outside but salt water & freezing, all surrounded by basic concrete. It looked unfinished, dated & soulless. No colour surrounding the pool area, ie. grass, plants, trees, etc, just concrete. No music playing in the bar area either in the hotel or by the pool so no holiday atmosphere at all. The restaurant was clean & well run but the food was very average. A great selection at breakfast but very limited during the evening & although it was ‘good’ it certainly didn’t justify 5*. Overall, it was a decent hotel but would justify a 4* at a push - we didn’t spend any time out by the pools in the end as it was painfully quiet & felt quite depressing to be lying in a ‘concrete jungle’. Loved Funchal but sadly this hotel wasn’t what we’d expected at all.

Rated as a 5 star hotel sadly this was not our experience. Location is very good with good links to Funchal and surrounding g areas. Breakfast was ok apart from having to wait in endless queues for the hot drinks machines but the standard of food in the evening buffet service was certainly not 5 star resulting in us eating out most nights. Most staff were pleasant but managers were not evident. We found the hotel lacked atmosphere and apart from the one bar available there were few comfortable seating areas. Our room on floor 10 had been refurbished with lovely views. However in this day and age we would have expected a walk in shower not an old bath with dated shower unit. The Thasalos spa was lovely but a charge of 25e for use of a steam room or spa facilities is not what you would expect of a 5 star hotel. There were positives to this hotel but there was no comparison to the 5 star Cliff hotel next door.
