We recently returned from a wonderful stay at Hotel Cala Esmeralda in Cala d'Or. Overall, it’s a clean, neat, and modern hotel with fantastic staff and great amenities, but there are a few practical details worth knowing before you go. Rooms, Vibe & Location The hotel boasts beautiful views, comfortable beds, and very nice, modern rooms. Upon arrival, we were welcomed with a glass of Cava, which was a lovely touch! The location is ideal, very convenient for exploring the resort area, and the access options are amazing: you can choose between multiple pools, direct access to the open sea, or a beautiful bay beach that's perfect for paddling and playing in. Me and my son played in the sea every day. Pool Areas Family Pools: The pool areas are great, but they do get quite overcrowded. Like many resorts, the hotel does struggle with guests reserving loungers early in the morning. Even as a family of three, it was often difficult to find seats together without shuffling chairs around or asking around for spares. Adults-Only Pool: If you get a chance to step away, the adults-only pool offers a genuinely calm, relaxed sanctuary. Beach Towels: Hotel beach towels are provided and can be exchanged as needed, so you can save your suitcase space and leave yours at home! Dragoland Dragoland is located behind a paywall (around €45 per day for a family of three). Because of the entry fee, it’s much less crowded, meaning there are always plenty of loungers and personal space. My 11-year-old son loved it, but as he is a bit shy around water, it suited his pace well. Older or more confident kids might find it a bit small and get bored quickly. We did it twice and enjoyed it both times, but due to the extra daily cost, and the fact my son will be a year older, we’d probably think twice about booking this option again next year. I was also under the impression that 1 days entry was included in our stay, but learned that this is only when booking your stay directly with the hotel, not as part of a package. Kids’ Activities & Entertainment The included activity program was outstanding, largely thanks to the hardworking, friendly staff who built a wonderful bond with the kids. My son loved playing football every morning. They even ran a mini-tournament one day; his team won, and the coach kindly bought them all a drink! The PlayStation nights were another huge hit, giving kids chance to make friends while parents can chill for a couple of hours. Unlike most things at the hotel, these activities were free Top Tip: The kids' activity schedule is not well-advertised. Make sure to ask at reception for the website link to see the full program. I spoke to one family who said they’d have brought their kids to the football if they’d known it was on. Note that there are no organised activities on weekends, though we didn't mind this as we spent weekends exploring the resort areas. Evening Entertainment: The evening shows and activities were good, but like the main pool area, the venue gets very overcrowded, you’ll need to arrive early to get a good seat. Food & Drinks The pool bar overlooking the beach has a brilliant vibe in the evening, and having the flexibility to eat and drink in different spots around the property kept things fresh. The staff in the bars work very hard and service is very quick. The food is good quality too In fact I would say the staff throughout the hotel were hard working, polite and friendly. Clearly well managed. There are cleaning, maintenance and customer facing staff all over and all seemed to be working hard. A credit to the hotel Verdict The hardworking staff, excellent kids' activities, and beautiful coastal setting made this a memorable holiday. If you go, make sure to ask reception for the activity schedule right away and get to the evening entertainment early if that’s your thing

“Loved the location!”

The location of the hotel is fantastic, and everywhere throughout is spotless. Very nice modern hotel. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is fantastic, and everywhere throughout is spotless. Very nice modern hotel. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The only things that put me off returning: -sun-bed wars! Something I’m lucky to never have experienced before. But having full grown adults throw towels over my daughter’s head (age 6) and claim them isn’t ok. - charging for the water park. Whilst we absolutely loved it and went twice (for the space mainly too) I think guests should get a day included. - when upgrading to a premium room the view from balcony should also be considered. We had the view of the car park all week. - sofas that children sleep on are rock hard. -the pool just isn’t big enough for the amount of guests there. It was so crowded at peak times you could barely move. We absolutely loved the location though, lots of lovely restaurants close by. Will definitely go to Cala d’Or again.
