Had a lovely stay at Escencia La Palma. The negatives were, remote location (knew that before I booked) really dated rooms, loose tiles around the pools and a few children cut their toes, weak air con and lack of shade or parasols around the pools for children. However the room was well equipped, the food was amazing, the staff were lovely and the animation team were so good they made the childrens holiday. The evening entertainment was also fabulous. The gym was fully equipped and so much better than most hotel gyms! I would 100% return.

“A Special Place”

Our 5th visit to this wonderful hotel. This is the 4th time we have stayed in Esencia since it opened - our first stay was in the La Palma and Teneguia part of the complex. The Esencia section is so much quieter than the main hotel, lots of space and easy access to the pools, the bar and other facilities. No issue with sunbeds; they are available at all times of the day. Rooms are modern and airy; we had a great view with a "double aspect" balcony looking out to sea and across the whole complex. Origen is perfect for a lazy, peaceful breakfast on the clifftop, and THE best place for sunset dinners. The food is markedly improved (not that it wasn't very good before), with smaller, but more varied dishes. We loved the amouse-bouche -style salads. As there was less food on offer at any one time, it meant that fresh plates were brought out more frequently, reducing food spoilage and drying out. In Origen, there was a choice of at least two fresh meats and two fresh fish cooked to order on the plancha grill. As in the past, the whole complex is spotlessly clean, especially now that food cannot be taken into the pool area. I have seen lots of complaints about flies, however very few bothered us. As others have commented, the hotel isolated, so if you know you'll get itchy feet, consider hiring a car. If you are happy to "fly and flop", then you'll have a great time. La Palma is an extraordinary island, and well worth the time to explore by car and on foot. Yes, Fuencaliente is a little remote and it is around 30-40 minutes to get to to Los Llanos or Santa Cruz, however the setting of the hotel at the base of the volcanic slope, perched on the edge of the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic is small price to pay for such a beautiful and peaceful setting. Oh, by the way, the staff are magnificent - try and speak a little Spanish and you will be rewarded with the warmest of welcomes and smiles. I took my two sons to La Palma Princess in the last week of July. (Aged 11 and 13) The hotel was lovely - the complex is so large it never feels too busy and there’s a lot to keep kids entertained. The rooms are large and cleaned daily. Air conditioning is perfect! Pools are gorgeous - a good temperature. You can check out towels for 15 euros. The pools never feel too crowded (as there are so many of them and they are large). There are always sun loungers left but if you want one in the shade you have to get in there quick. Don’t be fooled by the 26 degrees - the sun is fierce! We had sun every day - cloud threatens on the horizon but it never seems to actually arrive over the hotel. Pool side is very clean - a pool bar serves drinks all day and brings out delicious cake at around 4pm ish which you can help yourself to. We booked the tennis courts a couple of times - beautiful view of the ocean from them! There are loads of pool tables and a small arcade which kept my boys entertained. We didn’t go to any of the entertainment but there was always something on- something for smaller children and then a main event after. There are two shops which offer a good range of pool stuff (inflatables etc), sun cream, snacks and some touristy bits. Food was good - I’ve been all inclusive a couple of times before and have felt sick of the food after a few days but there was always something slightly different. If you love hash browns then you are in luck - they are heavenly. Always nicely cooked meat (chicken, steak, tuna, salmon, pork etc) and veg, salad in abundance, the really nice freshly cooked pizzas were a real hit for my sons. We did a day trip (on our own steam) to Santa Cruz. Really lovely (small) town, beautiful shops and streets. Huge black sand beach. Sea was a bit rough (and very cold!) so we didn’t brave it. Easy enough to do the trip via a couple of buses there and back. I was lazy and booked a taxi - about 55 euros each way - about 45 mins. Sunsets are absolutely breathtaking. Staff were lovely overall. I would definitely recommend the hotel.
