We stayed at Althenas for five nights in June, the room was basic but met our needs. We were upgraded to a room with a fridge free of charge which we were really grateful for as we could store water which was a life saver in the heat!! The room was clean, and the shower was lovely and powerful though if you had it on full power you were attacked by the shower curtains! The walls are very thin and we were woken by the man in the next room snoring and you can hear talking very easily. The reception staff were always really helpful and helped us visit a doctor and even spoke to them in Spanish for us so they new what we were visiting for. The hostel is about 20 minutes out of the centre depending where you get off but easily accessible via the metro which is a 5-6 minute walk from the hostel. We used the t10 travel card which is 10euros and allows you 10 journeys, we found this the easiest way of getting around with a toddler and buggy!! And travel cost us 30euros for the week for the three of us. Overall we had a nice stay at the hostel, there was always a bit of a sewage smell but we expect this is more to do with Barcelona's system overall rather than the hostel itself.

“Affordable Stay with Room for Improvement”

We stayed at Hostal Athenas for 7 nights. Hostal Athenas is located at the heart of Sant Adrià de Besòs and is conveniently located right near the Artigues-Sant Adrià metro station, which is about a 3 minute walk away. There are plenty of different cafes/bars nearby for an inexpensive breakfast/lunch/dinner. The reception is not often manned so there is an automatic check-in machine outside, it was quite easy to process and check in. We had 2 rooms during our stay as we requested to move as our first room (202) had an adjoining room and it was very noisy from the adjoining room. Also, the fridge did not work, and the Television was tiny. We were moved to room 308, which was slightly better regarding the noise, and had a fridge that worked and a larger TV. There were no tea/coffee facilities in the room, they are located in a little communal area on the 1st floor. The room was a decent size, with a kitchen sink, microwave and cutlery so you can easily make your own food there. The bed wasn’t particularly comfortable, maybe on the hard side and there was no proper duvet, just a thin sheet. However, the main problem was with the bathroom, it had drainage in the floor of the bathroom which must have been blocked as every time you used the sink, water would seep up from this drain, this must have been a problem for a long time because the bottom of the bathroom door was full of damp. This also caused a quite horrible smell. The sink itself was tiny, too small for me to be able to do anything comfortably. The more positive aspects of the room were that Wi-Fi was good with a stable connection and the air conditioning worked well. The cleaning service was good and was done every time we left the notice on the door and even when it wasn’t they knocked on the door and asked if we wanted anything doing. Overall, the best thing about this Hostal was its proximity to a metro station. We would probably stay here again unless there were better options.
