“Great location for the fort!”

Two night stay in this lovely hotel which is centrally located for shops, restaurants and the sights. Good selection at breakfast and staff are very friendly. All rooms are named after key individuals in Albanian history with a bio on the wall. Definitely recommend!

This is an old style hotel, very charming and traditional, but could do with some improvements. We found our room quite cramped, not sparking clean and fairly basic. This is an old style hotel, very charming and traditional, but could do with some improvements. We found our room quite cramped, not sparking clean and fairly basic. It was equipped with a fridge and a non functioning safe. No kettle and not even toiletries provided. The bathroom was very small. Wifi was so - so. On the upside, the bed was comfortable and the sheets smelled nice and fresh. Breakfast was good.

We travelled in a small group and stayed here two nights. The location is right in the heart of the historic centre of the town surrounded by shops, restaurants and bars. First impressions were of a charming, rustic family run hotel with helpful staff who assisted with getting luggage up to our rooms. The quaintness only goes so far in the 21st century. Room number 17 on the ground floor beneath the breakfast room had wood panelled ceiling, stone walls and a window about 40cm square. It proved to be very dark and needed to have the lights on even in daylight. We had rain when we were there and the beds felt damp so we had to use the reversible a/c to take the chill off. The shower room was modern and well appointed but the floor inside the shower didn’t have non-slip tiles and we had to be very careful. After showers the bathroom walls and floor were running with condensation which only cleared overnight by leaving the window open despite the cool temperature outside. Breakfast was somewhat chaotic because it wasn’t warm enough to sit out and when everyone arrived at the same time there was a shortage of tables. The food was reasonable in quality and quantity, the staff member was attentive to what was running out. We especially enjoyed the pancakes and homemade jams. It would be advisable for the owner to invest in commercial toasters as the two domestic ones were very slow. Unfortunately it seems that Albanians don’t drink black tea and, as found elsewhere, they only have a few teabags and they ran out during the first morning and not replaced. Herbal tea and coffee were always available. If you are only staying a night or two this is an authentic resting place if you can overlook the inconveniences.

You cannot review Eastern European hotels with the same eye you use to review a Western hotel; they are different. The owner will greet you with wine and raki and a snack but after that he doesn't want to be bothered. This hotel is located high up in the city of Gjirokaster and is difficult to get to, you'll understand if you stay here. Luggage has to be driven up here from the city center, and you will have to walk to this hotel and then climb multiple flights of stairs to get to the lobby. The morning breakfast buffet was pretty good. The rooms were nice, bathrooms were very small. It was clean. There was no safe in the room, no coffee maker. The AC worked really well. The public hallway lights were kept off most of the time which made it hard to get into the room or lock it upon leaving. Get ready to climbs LOTS of steps here. Other than the inconvenient high location, it is well located close to lots of bars and restaurants. I believe I would seek a hotel in a lower location next time.
