Now, as we all know Cradle Mountain is a spectacularly scenic but remote area of Tasmania. Consequently when you envisage a cabin park in the heart of this area, the immediate descriptors that come to mind are old, rustic, timber, rudimentary and hence somewhat uncomfortable. Well, the cabins in Discovery Park will open your imagination to a more elevated state of comfort. We had a two bedroom unit, with separate toilet and bathroom areas, and a reasonably spacious, integral kitchen, dining and lounge area. The kitchen was surprisingly well equipped with a large fridge/freezer, gas cooktop and oven, microwave and a full range of crockery, cutlery, glassware and cooking utensils. The lounge/dining area had a table and 4 chairs, 2 3-seater leather lounges and the compulsory TV, with the usual uninspiring free-to-air TV channels. Cradle mountain, of course, can get cold at any time of the year, and there is a pot belled stove and electric fire to keep you snug. His and her electric blankets on the bed and ceiling heating in the bathroom. There is also a park store which is well stocked with most of your essential needs. Whilst the bedrooms are small, the bed was comfortable. The bathroom is small but functional with a reasonable sized shower and plenty of hot water. There are also plenty of power points for your collection of electronic devices. The location is ideal, within walking distance of the Information Centre and the shuttle buses into the park. You will need a National Park pass to enter the park and the shuttle bus costs $15 per person. If you are not adventurous or just plain old like us, there are 4 short (40 minute) walks; Enchanted, Rainforest, Knyvet Falls and King Billy. All are relatively easy walks with aesthetically pleasing landscapes. Watch out for the sleeping black snakes, we saw 4. All these walks start from the Interpretation Station that can be accessed by car (2 kilometres past the Information Centre), with free parking and no requirement for a shuttle pass. So in summary, the cabins in Discovery Park will probably exceed your expectations and are very comfortable. Whilst you may think the daily tariff is a bit high, we paid virtually the same amount in a cabin in Swansea, which does not have the geographical restrictions of Cradle Mountain. So RECOMMENDED. “Great park”

This was the second time we have stayed in one of the luxury cabins. Beautiful design, ultra comfy, love them. The camp kitchen and laundry facilities are excellent and the park’s position almost adjacent to the visitor centre is ideal.

Loved this place. Peaceful. Warm. Close to Cradle. We stayed in one of the cabins on King Billy Court. We arrived right before the office closed, and safely ensconced ourselves in the warmth of the little two bedroom cabin. Loved this place. Peaceful. Warm. Close to Cradle. We stayed in one of the cabins on King Billy Court. We arrived right before the office closed, and safely ensconced ourselves in the warmth of the little two bedroom cabin. We all slept well, then were up early to 'do' Cradle Mountain for the following day (which was AWESOME!) and had to wash the ice off the car before we left! No snow, but a gorgeous hike and a wonderful full day was had. We rested in our warm cabin for a while before heading out to the nearby Hellyers Restaurant for dinner. Pricey but OMG delicious. Slept like logs again that night - so quiet! Sad to leave the next day. Highly recommend. The cabins are clean and compact without feeling cramped.
