Saint-Sauveur Bruges B&B is a wonderful historic building which is very central to all the sights in Bruges. We stayed in the Cathédrale room which was fabulous. The large gas fire was such a welcoming addition to the room. The room is huge and a cast iron roll top bath in situated in a separate adjoining room. The bathroom is spacious. The property is immaculately maintained. The breakfast was lovely and our host Karine was most helpful and lovely. We had a wonderful time in the most beautiful city of Bruges. I would highly recommend this beautiful place as a base to explore and enjoy Bruge.

This is one of the more difficult reviews I have ever written because I’m not sure how I feel about Saint Sauveur, a feeling shared by my travelling companion, but at the same time I know I must be balanced and fair. First the location is excellent for visiting Brugge centre. It is less than 10 minutes walk into the main square. The location is busy during the day but quiet at night and it feels safe to walk back to the hotel in the late evening (we returned around 10.30pm). There are plenty of shops nearby and restaurants which are slightly cheaper than in the main square, but let’s be honest – eating on the cheap in Brugge is not easy. I would also recommend booking a table if possible as even in April many of the restaurants were fully booked. We received a warm welcome from Karina who let us leave our bags until our rooms were ready (albeit in an area open to other guests). The building features old oak beams, high ceilings, large pieces of old furniture in the shared rooms which should have given the building a warm feel. But for me it didn’t, it felt cold (not temperature) and somewhat lifeless. The owners seem big on technology throughout with a nice 4 speaker sound system in the main dining/living area along with what appeared to be CCTV. I’m not normally paranoid but I had a feeling we were being monitored (I could be wrong). Using the lift or wide staircase is preferable to the narrow staircase to the rooms. The room was as seen on the website, tall with lots of wooden beams. It was well furnished and the bed was clean and comfortable. The technology extended to the room with controls to change the lighting in 5 different ways (Floor, bed left, bed right etc) which is fine until you get up in the night and don’t know which to press without flooding the room with light. I used my phone. There were two bedside lights but both were wall mounted exactly where you would lean back if you sat up in bed and if you positioned yourself between them you leaned on the wall mounted controls for the lighting system which are rocker switches and sensitive to being leaned on! Great TV and WIFI Router in the room, except the TV didn’t work (I think it was the handset) and the WIFI name on the in-room instructions did not exist. I tried the password on the free Saint Sauveur connection but that didn’t work either. When you entered the room there was a low cross beam that you consciously had to duck around which a piece of well positioned furniture (or the wicker manikin in another corner) would help you to avoid. A one inch step into the room caught us out twice as did the one inch step into the bathroom, which during the night when half asleep is not great. The very cold stone floor made me wish I’d taken my slippers which have never come on holiday with me before. I know these sound small niggles but put together we got the feeling that design and technology had come before practicality and gave an overall feeling of being unwelcoming as a room, which is a shame. But hey, if you want a bath in the middle of your bedroom and you can live with the niggles it’s great, I can only say how it made us feel. Breakfast was brilliant and taken on long shared tables which was fine by us and everyone having breakfast with us. A PARKING tip: If you are planning to park up while you visit and you can carry your luggage ok then the car park in Zilverstraat in the Zilverpand Shopping Centre is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. My advice would be to go to the car park first (Google Maps will guide you there). Due to the one way system in the area it is not straightforward going from outside the hotel. Around £15 for 24 hours but a good car park.

Loved this B&B. Great location, right in the centre, but just a bit set back, right near the cathedral. Lift was a real plus with our heavy bag, and there is the usual very steep stairs, as well as a newer wider set to the rear of the property. Room was lovely for our family of 4, with plenty of space, with a miniature bottle of wine and water waiting for us. Lovely. If I have to find any negatives, I would say: - Kettle in the room please to be able to make tea/coffee - Fix the leaky shower - The king bed was 2 singles pushed together and one was really quite uneven, and made you roll into the dip in the middle. Couldn't get comfy. - Garage that you hire is a 3 minute walk away but to drive it's 12 mins and we missed it twice :-( But that's Bruges and all the one-way streets. Minor niggle. - That orange juice was so lovely, it would have been great to be able to have a second or a larger glass. Delicious! - Check that the iPads are connected and working and charged or provide a charger as this was a selling feature on the website, but we couldn't get it to connect to the Sonos (didn't really bother us, but our almost teenage son was annoyed) :-) Loved: - That there was someone to welcome you but you were left alone for your stay - That the table for us 4 was laid in the lounge and we helped ourselves to a lovely buffet breakfast (though pays not to be too late down if there are other guests) - Location - second to none. And loved the rustic decor in the room. :Loved it.

We had mixed feelings on our stay. The beds are comfortable with great linens, the bathroom is modern and squeaky clean, there is an elevator which was welcome and the breakfast is excellent. There is all day access to coffee and tea. Also a plus, we were allowed to drop off our luggage early and the B&B is walking distance to the train station and everything in Bruges. However, when we arrived the person who greeted us gave us the key, asked us to pay in advance, told us when breakfast was and that was it. No other explanation of wi-fi, heating, amenities for guests (there is an empty fridge and microwave in the breakfast room for guests?) and he didn't even know what floor our room was on. We struggled with the wi-fi and heating the entire time we were there. The only time we saw staff was at breakfast. We did text (whatsapp) to find the remote for the fire place and our request was quickly responded to. The wi-fi in room was strong but only if you used the QR code in the room which was not explained and we did not figure out until the day we left. The décor is consist throughout -- a rustic and weathered style -- shabby chic. But it is very tired, and came across as cold and uninviting. The chandeliers throughout are lovely but very dirty. For those reasons we struggled to find it romantic. We picked a small hotel thinking we would have the benefit of staff to help us navigate the best of Bruges but it felt like an impersonal stay at an Airbnb.
