“Fine and functional, but soulless and charmless”

The B&B, part of a large chain, is well located within easy walking distance of central Mons. There is plenty of free parking nearby. The hotel looks like a modern building which has not quite been furnished - or a hotel where the movers have half done their job. I have never stayed in such a spartan, charmless and soulless room. Everything worked OK, but no evidence of style, a colour scheme or any individual touches (eg bare walls). Light insulation was good and noise insulation not bad. The breakfast, held in another vast, dreary room on the ground floor, offers a good choice of hot and cold dishes, but I had no desire to linger. So good value, but an utterly functional stay.

My husband had a conference in Mons a couple of weeks ago. I went with him, because after the conference, we were going to celebrate our anniversary in another location. We spent a total of five nights at B&B Mons Centre. There were some things about this hotel that I appreciated. It's very close to the downtown centrum of Mons, so getting there on foot is easy. It's near a large supermarket and some restaurants, which is handy. We managed to find street parking next to the hotel, which was free of charge and safe. I thought the housekeepers did a good job and they always had the room prepared in a timely manner. And the bed was surprisingly comfortable, as well. There were also a few things I didn't like. For example, the hotel advertises a parking garage, but it took three passes around the hotel before we found it. It's not very well advertised; the entrance is very narrow; and getting our SUV in it would have been difficult. When we checked in, we were initially given a large room on the first floor. The table in the room was very warped, and it appeared that there had been water damage. There was a very beat up doormat by what looked like a balcony or patio of some sort. We decided to change rooms when I went into the bathroom and found that the toilet seat was only halfway on its hinge and was practically falling off the commode. Fortunately, a smaller room in better condition was available on the third floor. The second room we offered didn't have a table, chairs, or balcony, and the bathroom had a tub/shower combo. I would have preferred the walk in shower that was in the first room, but the shower got decent pressure. However, I had to go buy toiletries at the local supermarket, because the shampoo/conditioner was too harsh on my scalp and gave me a rash. The hotel needs a renovation, as it appears that it's not been revamped since the 1990s. The carpets are very loud, mismatched, and kind of dirty looking. The rooms have weird backdrops behind the bed. I also thought the breakfast could have been better... especially the scrambled eggs, which appeared to be instant. The staff was pleasant and professional, which we appreciated. Overall, I think this hotel is convenient and has what most people need. However, there is a lot of room for improvement. I understand that making changes requires time and money, although at the very least, I would hope that things like broken toilet seats wouldn't be overlooked. Finding that problem on our first day didn't leave the greatest impression.
