This isn’t a fancy hotel with en suites and mini bars. However if you don’t want to stay in a hostel with shared rooms. This place is a great alternative - It’s easily reached from Berlin Ostbahnhof on the 240 bus which stops almost outside. The entrance is by door phone and the hotel itself is within a courtyard. It’s first impressions was cleanliness and German efficiency. Reception and dining room looked good with ample supplies of leaflets to local attractions. The bedroom itself was clean with white sheets so you knew it was clean. It’s not the most attractive looking room but it does the job of lending itself for sleeping in. The bathrooms are a bit weird as they are in the basement pass the dining room. Not an awful lot of privacy in the bathroom but I got by. The breakfast is extra and is worth eating. As it’s a selection of hot and cold dishes along with cheese and bread. Coffee, tea and juice was available too. There’s a nice Asian restaurant opposite which had cheap food and there’s various shops including a grocers for your supplies. But you’re only a short ride away from the Eastside mall. I will be returning next year.

“Visiting relative”

Spotlessly clean and comfortable hotel with comfy beds and excellent bathroom. Buffet breakfast excellent. Super budget hotel in the heart of Frieichshain. Some other reviewers appeared not to have such a positive experience but we couldn't fault it for the price we paid and it met all our needs.

This was one of the cheapest hotel options as a solo traveller that I could find in Berlin, without staying at a hostel or backpackers. The Hotel Comenius was quiet, and I don’t think I actually saw or met any other guests during my short time there. The location was fine, as it was accessible by public transport, and it really wasn’t that far from Berlin’s Alexanderplatz. I rode in by bicycle and it wasn’t an issue for me, and the East Side Gallery is also not that far away (a bit of a walk or a short bike or tram ride away to the corner of Warschauer Str. and Mühlenstraße). It was a little hard to find the entrance as I needed to press the appropriate buzzer to be connected to reception so that they could remotely unlock the front gate for me. I again had to be buzzed in through the main door from the secure building courtyard. This wasn’t an issue, but the hotel does appear to share a building with residential units. From what I could tell, certain floors belonged to the hotel, while certain floors did not. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel for people with mobility issues, as there were stairs to climb and the lift would have been added to the building as a renovation, so each lift stop was on the stairwell landing in between floors. Reception was pleasant although with limited English, which is fair enough as this is Germany, not England, and I was still able to communicate reasonably. Be aware that reception is not 24 hours, so plan to arrive during opening hours. My room was clean and acceptable. The TV had limited channels that were of interest, and I expected the advertised “shared bathroom” to be on the same floor. In fact the layout was a bit odd, in that my room’s toilet was a few doors down the hallway on the same floor, whilst the bathroom/shower (which actually had my room number on it so it wasn’t so much shared as being separate to the room) was on a totally different floor. This meant a walk with my clothes, towels and toiletries downstairs, past reception and the breakfast area, down some more stairs to a basement level, whenever I wanted a shower. For the price, I was prepared to put up with this but it was certainly “original”! Breakfast looked to be pretty good value for money, though it wasn’t included in my tariff and I didn’t take advantage of it on account of time constraints. The area of Friedrichshain was itself nice enough, a bit of a residential neighbourhood but with plenty of dining options (especially along Gabriel-Max Straße) as well as some smaller shops and the East Side Mall in fairly close proximity. All in all good value when I paid €23 for a night in a clean, quiet and private room within a 4km radius of Berlin’s centre. Nothing special, but nothing bad either!
