Great experience that met even exceeded my expectations. Very good location. Clean hotel. Great combination of swimming pool and private beach behind. Friendly staff. Variety of food. Good massages. The best kids animation we have had with very dedicated and nice girls. Special thanks to Toni and Dori for their attention, my son had great time. Only one small recommedation: many of the laying beds on the beach are broken, have to be replaced. Parking is also limited. Something to keep in mind: guests reserve laying beds (from the night before) I would definetely recommend the hotel and come back!

HVD Riviera Beach Hotel, Golden Sands This year, I became something of an expert on Bulgarian hotels. I read reviews. I compared hotels. I analyzed hundreds of photos. I ruled out option after option. I compared pools, beaches, rooms, restaurants, and services with the thoroughness of a forensic investigator. In the end, HVD Riviera Beach came out on top. Why? Simple: a family-friendly hotel, an indoor pool with warm mineral water, a private beach, premium services, a quiet location away from the busy resort center, and five-star status. I arrived convinced that all my research had finally paid off. Ironically, the first thirty minutes confirmed that I had made the perfect choice. What I didn't know was that the real experience would begin after check-in. Four days later, I still couldn't tell whether this hotel was a wellness retreat or a family resort. One thing I did discover, however, was that the entrance barrier knows exactly what it is. I genuinely liked the room. It was spacious, bright, with a beautiful balcony and a view that instantly reminded you why you had chosen the sea. About ten minutes later, the safe stopped working. Not because of thieves—but because the batteries were dead. I smiled. These things happen. Although, when even the safe needs new batteries, it's hard not to wonder whether the hotel's maintenance could also use a little attention. That was the moment I felt as though I had accidentally opened the wrong door. The room looked as if it had last been renovated around 2019, but the bathroom seemed determined to preserve the spirit of the 1990s. Functional? Yes. Modern? About as modern as a tube television. Then there was the beach. The hotel advertises a "private beach." You get there and discover that it's about as private as the Black Sea itself—that is, open to everyone. After a storm, the seaweed had been partially raked into small piles and discreetly covered with sand. Perhaps the hope was that if guests couldn't see it anymore, it no longer existed—or that the sun would eventually solve the problem. Back home in Romania, I thought only sun loungers reserved themselves. I was wrong. In Bulgaria, towels reserve them. I suspect the towels wake up around six in the morning, head down to the beach, and claim the best spots long before their owners appear after breakfast. The hotel rules clearly state that reserving sun loungers is prohibited. Apparently, nobody told the towels. The all-inclusive buffet restaurant taught me another lesson: variety and flavor are not always close relatives. The buffet was impressive. There were plenty of dishes—without being excessive. Plenty of trays, yet somehow it felt like the saying, "So many people, so little substance." There were countless combinations, while I kept searching for something remarkably simple: a nicely grilled fish, a properly cooked steak, boiled corn, or a slice of cold watermelon. Sometimes three dishes prepared exceptionally well are worth far more than thirty prepared... acceptably. And then there was something else. While guests were eating, members of the staff were sweeping between the tables. Not quietly picking up something that had fallen. Sweeping. That was another moment when I realized that abundance and quality do not necessarily go hand in hand. I don't question the staff's work ethic. I only question the timing they chose to demonstrate it—right in the middle of people having lunch. It was the first hotel where my meal came with a subtle flavor of... dust. ### The Swimming Pool and the Great Inflatable Ball Affair This was the moment I realized the hotel still hasn't decided what it wants to be. One of the main reasons we chose this hotel was its indoor mineral-water pool. The outdoor children's pool sits in full sun, so we were quietly playing with our children in the indoor pool using a small inflatable ball. They weren't running. They weren't screaming. They weren't bothering anyone. They were simply playing. One gentleman declared himself deeply disturbed. A complaint followed. Then the reception manager arrived. I asked him a very simple question. "Is there any rule prohibiting children from playing with a ball in the pool?" "No." "Then what's the problem?" "Only if someone complains..." And at that moment, everything became clear. At this hotel, the rules are not written by management. They're written by the first guest who decides to complain. Today it's the ball. Tomorrow it might be laughter. The day after tomorrow... breathing. The reception manager was extremely polite. The problem is that politeness doesn't resolve conflicts. Competence does. I didn't need an explanation of how complaints travel from one guest to reception and then back to another guest. I needed to know whether the hotel actually had a rule. A reception manager isn't simply someone who smiles. A reception manager is someone who applies the hotel's rules. And when those rules don't exist, the first thing that's missing isn't peace and quiet. It's authority. ### Final Thoughts This is not a bad hotel. That's precisely what makes the experience so frustrating. It has an outstanding location. Beautiful rooms. Spectacular sea views. An indoor mineral-water pool that very few hotels can offer. Polite and hardworking staff. But it lacks the one thing no photograph can capture: **Identity.** The hotel still hasn't decided whether it's a wellness retreat or a family resort. You can't market yourself to families with children and then turn an inflatable ball into an administrative incident. You can't promise premium service while sweeping the floor between tables where people are still eating. You can't allow towels to manage the beach instead of enforcing your own rules. And you can't have flawless procedures at the entrance barrier while treating the hotel's internal rules as optional. I left with one regret. Not that I chose this hotel. But that a property with such tremendous potential is being held back by problems that don't require millions of euros to fix. They require management. Clear rules. And people who are trained—and empowered—to apply them. I sincerely hope that one day this hotel will find its identity. Because when it does, it will have every chance of becoming a genuine five-star hotel—not simply one that promises to become one. In conclusion, **HVD Riviera Beach** is proof that you can build a beautiful hotel without building equally strong management. The rooms are lovely. The location is exceptional. The views are breathtaking. Yet the management somehow achieves the remarkable feat of turning an inflatable ball into a crisis, a towel into a permanent beach resident, and the rulebook into something of an endangered species—everyone talks about it, but no one has actually seen it. Next year, I don't think I'll be comparing the Romanian and Bulgarian Black Sea coasts anymore. I think I'll be comparing flight schedules instead. For three or four days of peace and relaxation, I'll probably be looking for a plane rather than another hotel on the Black Sea. Because HVD Riviera Beach didn't just make me decide not to come back. It made me wonder whether, for a short holiday, it's time to change not only the hotel—but the sea itself.
