We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Conrad Shenzhen. Although the location is a bit remote, approximately 45 minutes to an hour from the airport or train station, the affordability of taxis made the travel time worthwhile. The hotel, being relatively new, boasts impressive modern decor. The service was excellent, and the room was exceptional. It was unfortunate that we stayed here first, as the subsequent three Conrad hotels we visited did not measure up to this standard.

“Everything good except no YouTube and insufficient TV channels”

Located in the commercial district and as I checked in Sunday, the place was quiet and peaceful, unlike the rest of Shenzhen. Service at reception and western restaurant was really nice and patient. Located in the commercial district and as I checked in Sunday, the place was quiet and peaceful, unlike the rest of Shenzhen. Service at reception and western restaurant was really nice and patient. The lunch set was great and nicely presented, breakfast above average at least more towards western. Room view and everything were good except I cannot cast the display to TV (maybe my problem), should have more non mainland channels and wonder why they don't have YouTube on.

The pace of change in Shenzhen's hotel scene is breathtaking. Since my first visit during the trial operation of Shenzhen Conrad in June 2023, I returned for a second stay after quite some time and noticed significant updates. The hotel is located in the heart of Qianhai CBD, adjacent to MixC Qianhai, though the surrounding area is developing at a slower pace. Facing the bay, the building enjoys open, unobstructed views with no new constructions blocking the scenery, making the outlook a rare advantage. The owner, Hongrongyuan, an influential Chaozhou-Shantou family-backed real estate group in Shenzhen, has invested considerable effort in hardware and design. The Chaozhou influence is also evident in the attention to feng shui. The nearly ten-meter-high entrance makes a grand yet calm statement. At the doorway, a fusion of Taihu rock and the Taiji yin-yang symbol represents the two polarities, with a yellow circular dome above symbolizing the heavens and a reflecting pool below representing the earth, creating a harmonious balance between sky and ground, movement and stillness. The figurative sculpture beside the entrance once went viral on social platforms. Although its decorative details have been adjusted multiple times due to copyright issues, it remains a popular Qianhai photo spot, often crowded with well-dressed influencers, which somewhat affects the guest experience. Stepping into the welcome lobby, a vibrant red maple tree stands as a symbol of warm hospitality. In the elevator lobby, a spiral sculpture named Tower of Stars rises upward, adorned with outlines of fishing village houses, alluding to Shenzhen's transformation from a small fishing village to a metropolitan city. On the fifth floor, the front desk continues Yabu+Pushelberg's restrained elegance. A three-section corridor and lofty ceilings create a serene, majestic atmosphere. Compared to other modern Conrad hotels, Shenzhen Conrad emphasizes Eastern charm more distinctly. The backdrop of the front desk features a wall installation called City Rhyme, which deconstructs and presents the essence of seven traditional Chinese architectural styles, including Shanghai, Beijing, and Suzhou schools, highlighting cultural depth. However, there is a noticeable gap in service. Since opening, the hotel has not offered suite upgrades to Diamond members. This time, I stayed in an executive guest room at a corporate rate, with no welcome amenities, and no proactive offer of the signature rubber duck or bear. That said, the 51-square-meter base room is well-equipped with a Washlet toilet, Dyson hairdryer, Byredo amenities, and 5100 mineral water, balancing comfort and practicality for a respectable business stay. Breakfast was initially served in the executive lounge as a semi-buffet for privacy. It has now been moved to the all-day dining venue, The Common Room, and changed to a full buffet. Nearing the end of service during my visit, hot food stations were being cleared, and the signature Chaozhou-style seafood congee had to be specially requested from staff. Overall, the culinary standard has declined noticeably compared to the early days. Objectively speaking, Shenzhen Conrad surpasses the entry-level luxury positioning of the Conrad brand in terms of spatial design and hardware, even reaching Waldorf Astoria standards in some aspects. Yabu's refined touch has made it a flagship Conrad property in China regarding cultural expression and design execution. The letdown lies in relaxed service software, restrained membership benefits, and the combination of large conferences and influencer crowds, which dilute the tranquil luxury atmosphere that should define the experience. Still, within its own framework, the hotel has demonstrated considerable sincerity and ambition.
