“A Nice Hotel Overlooking The Beijing-Hangzhou Canal.”

I took my family to the Crowne Plaza Yangzhou between May 22nd and May 23rd of 2021. We booked the Club Room initially, but were upgraded to the Special View Club Room through my IHG Platinum Elite Membership. We arrived at the hotel to be greeted by Clark Xu. He was a professional and nice front desk staff member. Mr. Xu got us checked in at Rooms 1201 & 1205 in 11 minutes. Upon arrival to the rooms, each room was clean to perfection interiorly. We would appreciate more if the windows could be cleaned. But overall, nice design, modern and comfortable. We also loved the view of the historic canel. To my slight disappointment, the Club Lounge was understandably under renovations. The alternate services included Afternoon Tea at the Cigar Bar. We found the experience to be alright. It is a shame to not experience the real lounge. I should note however, for the alternate experience of the Happy Hour, we were upgraded to a Dinner at The Marina All-Day Buffet Restaurant. Unfortunately we couldn’t make it, but we certainly appreciate the given opportunity to try their buffet. We found the swimming pool to be pleasant and a great place to cool down. Breakfast was pretty local. With items like a Red Soup Little Wontons, noodles and other breakfast specialities. We should also note the appreciation of recognizing my IHG Rewards Club Membership by placing a dedicated seating area for those members. We would appreciate a larger variety and increased service from waitresses such as tea & coffee service. I should note however that this is Crowne Plaza and NOT InterContinental. This brand is at the Premium Level over Luxury Level of IHG. My expectations were lower than my usual InterContinental Hotel Visits. Overall, my expectations were met based on how I perceived the brand. We deeply appreciate the hard work by Mr. Xu and the Concierge Team. This hotel earns my 5 stars based on the expectations met.

“Recommended”

This hotel is next to the lake, very good hotel for relaxing and morning and evening walk. The hotel room is slightly bigger than standard hotel room and the washroom with separate shower/ bathtub and toilet, we like the design. Breakfast is good, coffee also good!

For the area, there is no doubt that this is the best option as it is on the eastern side of Yangzhou. The rooms are spacious, the bed very comfortable and the bathroom and tub a nice size. Very nice Borghese bathroom toiletries. Not one English international channel, even for news. That said, there were a few things that fell short. Room service menu is very limited and for someone who had to work late and didn't want to go out for dinner, the choice after on the third night was already difficult. I would have usually gone for local food, but Yangzhou food is generally heavy and oily and the European choices were not appealing. Yangzhou fried rice was good, wontons far too oily and I received a Coke instead of Coke Zero, and the Club Sandwich nothing to write home about. The breakfast in the coffee shop whilst a buffet was also very local-oriented and same issues as room service - either greasy and heavy, or a very limited non-Chinese choice. I put the tray outside the door for pick up at 9pm and the next morning, it was still there. This is a first for me and shows that either no one patrols the floors at night (a standard security procedure) or room service isn't instructed to, or just doesn't follow up with the orders sent out to pick up the trays. Effort on sustainability is also half-hearted. packaging of bathroom amenities are in paper, but the card on the bedside for reusing the sheets doesn't exist, and the one in the bathroom to reuse towels is hidden in the amenity drawer at the back, mixed in with other items. Laundry was returned with each item INDIVIDUALLY packed in it's own polybag - just not necessary!! Pulling a towel out from under the sink counter, it rubbed against the edge and was covered in dirt, toothpaste smears on the mirror and hair on the floor - cleanliness is not as good and thorough as it could be. I needed to extend a night and the very first thing was being told 'we need more money'. The level of English is poor, but confirming that the room was indeed available for asking for cash would have been more polite and professional. Would I stay here again? Probably due to location and basic comforts but I would expect more from a 4-star IHG establishment.
