This big, beautiful, Japanese style hotel in the heart of downtown Dalian is still a gem. It can be booked online without a credit card, free, and you can change the booking, if you book through TripAdvisor.com. Right around the corner is Cafe Copenhagen, which may be the best "Western" restaurant in Dalian. Nikko is easy to find as it towers over everything in the neighbourhood. There are good clubs and shops in the neighbourhood, right across the street, up the street, and on the next block.

“Nice and Cool Rooms”

This is a fantastic hotel with great AC, well appointed rooms and a pretty good breakfast buffet. We booked the smart room and it was nice and cool when we entered, had a great bathroom with tub, shower and a Japanese style toilet. The breakfast buffet had a good mix of options and would cook a variety of meats fresh like steak, chicken or mackerel. The also had an omelette station, noodle/wonton station, a western breakfast station (servers French toast one day) and a Japanese area with poached egg, Japanese pickled items, sushi and miso. The variety was pretty good. The room was well appointed with lots of furniture to sit in, a work station and good views of the surrounding city. The room was also very clean but it seemed some of the wooden furniture needed to be refinished. There are lots of elevators in this hotel so we were able to get in and out quite quickly. We enjoyed the pool complex but I think that it could be improved by updating pool furniture and providing more frequent cleaning in the changerooms. Some of the lounge chairs are broken and have missing levers. In the evenings there were no clean towels or lockers in the men's changeroom and a good collection of dirty towels. I mentioned it to the staff at the desk and had troubles communicating to them and got the runaround. I mentioned these concerns to the front desk and they advised that they will work to address these concerns. Once I got the towel situation sorted out each night I enjoyed the sauna, steam room, cold tub and hot tub of the changeroom. The hotel is in a quieter area and it is walkable to a few attractions like the Russian Street, Zhongshan Square and the tram. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from Zhongshan Square Metro station - Exit B1 is best for exit but be careful crossing the streets getting to the hotel.

This is a five star hotel in Dalian, and it deserves its five stars. As this is now in the Nikko family (former Hilton) it comes to no surprise that more of the staff has Japanese as a second language than English. Still the staff is generally friendly, hard working and attentive. The rooms are large and comfortable, although you can see signs of wear and tear here and there. The hotel has good restaurants, I tried the buffet and the Chinese restaurant and both were good. They have a large fitness and spa area, with a large pool, a distinct plus. When you add that the location is central in down town and that they have competitive prices compared to other 5 star hotels I will give my recomendation to choose this hotel.

Nikko Hotel is conveniently located at the Zhongshan District, a 10 minute walk from Zhongshan Plaza where all the banks and the Friendship Mall are located. It is also close to the Tianjin Street and the Russian Street which are the local attractions. We had a Delux Twin Room with breakfast and it cost only just under US$400 for 4 nights. The room was very spacious with complete amendities. Besides the restaurant where we had breakfast, the hotel also has a Chinese restaurant and a Japanese restaurant. We tried out the Chinese restaurant on our last evening. The food was good and very very reasonable. The portions were very big. We could not even finish half of the dishes which was a shame. We had a chicken dish, a fried glass noodles with foi gras, a tomato ox tail and ox tendon pot, plus a bowl of rice. It cost only just over RMB200. Right next to Nikko is another hotel restaurant 金裕美食. The food there was so good that we had to have dinner there for two out of three evenings. On one of the evenings, even with delicacies like abalone, sliced whelk, uni dumplings and a stuffed egg plant dish, the bill only came to RMB400+ for two people. In general food is very good and prices are more than reasonable even in the hotels. Dalian is a very affordable city. The best time to visit is in mid October after the Labour Holidays and before it gets too cold. I would avoid going there in July and August when shools are on holiday and the weather can be very hot. Many of the places are without air conditioning.
