Travelled in Sichuan in the second half of October, 2025. Picked the Shangri-La hotel to stay in Chengdu as I am a Jade member of Shangri-La Circle. Location of hotel is not close to the subway station. It is a good 15 minutes walk to the nearest subway station. I was allocated to stay on the 16th floor. The room was quiet, clean and comfortable. However, there was strong odor coming out from some of the rooms when the doors were opened even though the floor was a non-smoking floor. Check-in process was troublesome. I had booked the room on a day to day basis for a week. When I checked-in, I was questioned why had I done that. Shangri-La offers to buy dining credit at a bargain price when you book the room. I had only wanted to buy dining credits for couple days and also to make my trip and schedule flexible. It appeared that this type of booking arrangement was not welcomed by the Front Desk. The Front Desk rep had to merge all my bookings. When I checked out, the information on the receipt of my stay was very confusing. Also, one of the nights was not credited for my points reward. I had to write to claim the missing points. Despite the service of the Front Desk was not what I expected, service of the concierge was excellent. My wife was not feeling well. We asked the concierge which hospital would be the best and less crowded. They made a great suggestion and called a taxi for us. In additional, service was great when dined in Shang Palace. The waitresses Anne, Annie and Iris provided great service. Staff service in Cafe Z was also very good. Unfortunately, I did not check out the swimming pool and the gym. Overall, I feel my experience staying in Shangri-La Chengdu was mediocre.

“Mixed Feelings - Lovely Property, Room Renovation Needed”

We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. The property itself is beautiful, with lots of expansive space. However, the rooms felt quite dated (i.e., the carpet was stained, and the grout in the bathrooms was discolored). It seems like a renovation will be needed soon... We had a rather odd experience during check-in. The man assisting us asked if we wanted an upgrade, but the way he phrased it made it unclear whether it was complimentary or came at an extra cost. When we asked for clarification, he confirmed that it would require additional payment. We declined, but the whole interaction felt very sales-oriented and not what we would expect from a five-star hotel. On a positive note, the Horizon level food and drinks were the best we’ve experienced at any Shangri-La hotel. The breakfast was amazing, as is always the case with Shangri-La.

The room was large, the location was ideal and the facilities like the gym and the pool were the highlight but the service quality was mixed. Overall the service lacked the warm quality I have come to expect from other Shang hotels in Asia, especially as a Golden Circle member. It was difficult to order room service in English. One night a lady called an woke me up mistakenly having though I had request something. When I corrected her she didnt even apologize and instead abruptly hung up the phone.

“Very poor”

Not sure how a 5* hotel has no tonic water. Large groups of overseas visitors and a very poor selection of drinks available in the bar.
