Mama Cuchara by Art Hotels is a genuinely sophisticated property that stands apart from the typical hotel experience. From the moment you arrive, the thoughtfully curated art collection — rotating works from Ecuadorian artists displayed throughout the hotel — sets a tone of quiet elegance that carries through every corner of the building. This is clearly a place with a genuine personality. My room was on the smaller side, but well appointed with everything you need — a supremely comfortable bed, strong WiFi, international TV channels, and a generous bathroom with a large walk-in shower. A lovely touch is the complimentary selection of local Ecuadorian snacks left in the room — a small detail that speaks to the hotel’s attention to hospitality. Breakfast offers a solid spread of both hot and cold dishes to set you up for a day of exploring. The rooftop bar and restaurant is one of the hotel’s standout features — the views across Quito are spectacular, particularly as the sun sets over the city’s colonial rooftops and the Andes beyond. Staff across the board are friendly, attentive and genuinely helpful — a point consistently echoed in other recent reviews. Worth noting that the hotel sits slightly south of the main historic centre, so it’s a bit far to walk to the key sights — but taxis are inexpensive and readily available. For culturally minded travellers looking for a distinctive, elegant base in Quito, Mama Cuchara delivers in style. A really classy place to stay.

Overall I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The check-in process was quick and my room was ready early, which was lovely after a long overnight flight. Overall I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The check-in process was quick and my room was ready early, which was lovely after a long overnight flight. The room was very clean, a good size, and the bed was very comfortable. The coffee provided in the room was also some of the best coffee I've ever had! The location is excellent: a quick walk from downtown Quito made this an easy place to stay while still being in a quiet area. The one change I would make to this hotel would be to provide earplugs in the guest rooms; on my first night, there was a wedding going on in the hotel's central restaurant, and on my second night, the restaurant was open to the public. While the wedding wrapped up by 9pm, the equipment breakdown noises and standard restaurant noises on the second night were disturbing to my sleep. I was glad I brought my own pair of earplugs! Overall, I would stay here again.

Stayed on 3 occasions whilst travelling around Ecuador. Excellent service from friendly staff. A well located hotel in a quiet area of the Old Town. The hotel is clean and although not large the rooms have everything you need. There is a complementary snack basket available and mini deserts are delivered every evening. Rooms are located around an internal courtyard which can mean some noise from the ground floor restaurant. There is a rooftop bar with views over the city, this also serves food. Art and artefacts add interest to the decor. A good base to explore the city. Plentiful breakfast and varied lunch and evening menu.

“A let down due to the hotel hosting a wedding during our stay.”

We stayed here for two nights before flying to the Galapagos. The positive factors were an exceptionally friendly team of staff, a nice en-suite with a big walk-in shower and a comfortable bed. The negative factors unfortunately out-weighed our stay - the bedroom was very small and dark, and opened out directly onto the courtyard restaurant, so there was very little privacy. Whilst we were staying at the hotel, a wedding took place one afternoon with a band playing extremely loud music and we were unable to even gain access to our rooms due to the wedding set-up. We returned to the hotel mid-afternoon and the staff were extremely embarrassed, I can only assume that they assumed we would be out for the whole day and hoped by the time we returned the wedding would have finished. We really had no choice but to leave the hotel and go for drinks in a nearby cafe and when we returned a few hours later the wedding had finished and they were clearing up. The only reason I have not given a very bad review is the hotel did profusely apologise and tried to help with the unacceptable situation, but my advice would be to ensure that there is no wedding taking place when you book a room and I would also request a room on a higher floor.
