We spent five nights at Hotel Mediterraneo Quito. The room was not large, but was very affordable. Our room, bathroom, and the entire hotel were very, very clean and nicely maintained. the staff was kind and helpful. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. The owners were welcoming and accommodating. Two family members spoke English, which was helpful, and those who didn't went out of their way to assist us anyway. the location was great, close to the basilica and a short hike to the historic district. There is a laundry right across the street (three hour service), as well as daytime restaurants, and a drug store near by. We walked in the day, and took taxi at night and never felt unsafe. Somehow, I managed to lose my passport in the room shortly before leaving and the owner and his family shared my concerns, were ready to help in any way necessary, and were as happy as I was when I found it. Unlike other reviewers, we did not hear backing dogs or much other noise at night. Like many places in Ecuador (and other SA countries) the water was not hot, but did reach warm. We did not spend much time in the room, but used the hotel as a home base for day outings and tours. Hotel Mediterraneo is a good value and we enjoyed our stay there. A good choice if you want a clean secure hotel for good value.

The Hotel Mediterraneo Quito is a 3-Star Hotel located in the historical heart of the city of Quito. Apart from comfortable rooms and clean appliances, it also offers a little peak into the historic architecture of Quito. Hotel Mediterraneo is set in a colonial house from the 19th century in Quito´s old town. It provides a terrace overlooking the city and free WiFi access. The location is perfect within less than one kilometer you can easily reach the colonial houses, a theatre, and a basilica as well as Sucre Theatre. After an exhausting day of sightseeing you have two options from your room, either just enjoy the view of ‘El Panecillo’ or turn on your flatscreen TV. You can also relax on the sunny terrace while admiring the views of Quito or relax in the nearby park Alameda. The choice is yours. The rooms in Hotel Mediterraneo Quito also include a writing desk and a wardrobe. Furthermore, private toilets are clean and warm water will make you feel at home. You can choose between Single, Double and Tripple rooms. For your safety, the 24h front desk service only opens the doors to current guests and make you feel very safe and welcome at all times. The staff is very knowledgable and will be able to help you out whenever needed. Breakfast and/or lunch can be found within a few meters from the doorstep. The restaurant on your lefthand side offers a basic Ecuador-style menu with a soup, main dish, and dessert. Nothing fancy but good and clean cuisine where you will not leave hungry. On the main road, supermarkets or street food vendors are within a 100m radius to fulfill all the possible needs. Free private parking is available at Mediterraneo Quito.

“Everything is not always as it seems.”

I was planning on staying here based primarily on the location as I had been in Quito before. The price was ok and according to their web site the staff were fluent in three languages, one of which was English. As my Spanish is not very good this is almost a requirement for me. Upon arrival I soon found out that no one speaks a word of English so communication was difficult, if not impossible. I had to use my computer and google translator to communicate. There was NO hot water when I arrived and only very little warm water after complaining using the translator. The web site said that they had a laundry service. They do not!!! The hotel is right next door to a school and at 7:15 every morning the school siren goes telling the children that it class time. More annoying than this was the three yappy dogs on the second floor patio of the house next to the school. These dogs barked incessantly of and on all the time, day and night. On the positive side the room and bathroom were spotless and the cleaning lady did an excellent job every day. Breakfast was delivered to my room and was adequate with juice, coffee, bread and jam, fresh fruit and eggs. The area is close to a park and a hospital is on the same street which always has security out front. I don't consider that this area is any more dangerous than any other area in a large city like Quito.I walked with my backpack and camera and never had a feeling of being in danger. Having said that I always make sure that I'm back in my room at a reasonable hour (usually around 8:00 pm) and if I will be latter I use the taxis which are reasonably priced. I was planning on staying here for seven nights during my stays in Quito broken up by a weekend trip to Otavalo and then the Galapagos, however after the first three nights I moved to a much better place in the Mariscal Sucre area where I was welcomed on the phone with English and it was within easy two block walking distance of many restaurants in Plaza Foch. If you are fluent in Spanish and can tolerate dogs and not having hot water then this hotel would be an option. For me it was not a pleasant stay and I can not recommend it to others.
