Initially I was concerned about the booking made through Expedia. I'd paid upfront for two single rooms months in advance. From the hotel I only got confirmation for one room and attempts to confirm the two rooms were conflicting. As Expedia assured me that all was well I trusted them and rolled with it. I needn't have worried as all was in order on arrival where my companion and I were greeted by a lovely young, well mannered receptionist. The area was less salubrious than its neighbouring ones but it was lively and busy with people and travellers of all nations. Conveniently placed opposite was the Metro Barbes-Rouchechouart from where we were able to reach all parts of Paris. And even more conveniently placed was the Brasserie Barbes which was excellent. Downstairs was casual bar food and upstairs was more for dining with good French cuisine with a great ambience. The single rooms we'd booked were small, as expected, but the beds were double. The decor was a little dated with chipped paint on the corners but I have to say it was all incredibly clean. The pillows were plump and the bedding new, clean and brilliantly white. The shower and w.c. were separate and the sink was the smallest I'd ever seen, but cute. I didn't have a wardrobe but I did have hangers and pegs with a couple of shelves which were perfectly adequate for the lighter traveller. There was a tv but no English channels.. not even BBC world news but that wasn't a problem as the wifi was strong and I used my phone to get what I wanted. As with the older hotels there was no lift so bear in mind that the spiral staircase could be a problem if you're not very mobile. Features like this are typically French which is what I love. Breakfasts were very good with a selection of baguette, croissant, pastry, cheese, ham, scrambled and boiled egg, Frankfurter, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, jams, teas and coffees... more choice than other Paris hotels I've stayed in and all for 12 euro, which is really good value. Overall I would recommend this hotel as long as you manage your expectations. It's 3 star so don't expect 5 star! It's super clean, very friendly staff, run extremely efficiently with no waste whatsoever. Cost for a single room was £90.34/night staying in June. I will be returning!
