The Canal Saint-Martin, which encompasses parts of the 10th and 11th arrondissements in Paris, is a rare gem. To many residents and visitors alike, it perhaps feels like a lovely slice of Amsterdam in the midst of Paris’s busier, more expensive, and more touristic neighborhoods. Somewhere between the idyllic canal-side pique-piques and the flock of Parisians zipping past on their bicycles, lies Le Citizen Hôtel, a small and welcoming oasis for all visitors, whether they be French residents on holiday, or foreigners looking for a bit of relaxed charm. It was here, in front of the café counter of Le Citizen, that I found myself on a perfect Parisian Saturday afternoon, while exploring the canal area’s bohemian, artistic vibe and craving a cafecito. When my family arrived at Le Citizen, we were enthusiastically greeted by Chaim, who manages the front desk and the coffee shop. Chaim is one of those people who possesses such a positive energy and enthusiasm for connecting with people! He immediately got to work on crafting a smooth, delicious latte and some bold, refreshing cold brews for us. Chaim has worked in the barista profession for many years, so when he recommends a drink you can rest assured— you’ll love it! My parents and I also enjoyed freshly-squeezed orange juice (the best I’ve had!), and the café is adjacent to Mike’s Pizza Joint within the hotel for an authentic by-the-slice lunch! Whether it’s catching up with an old friend or chewing the rag with a new one, the coffee shop is a perfect backdrop for conversation served alongside an afternoon (or morning) treat! (The one thing I will mention is that there are no accessible toilets onsite, so please plan your visit accordingly.) To me, the most meaningful part of any experience when traveling is the element of human connection. Luckily for me, human connection is at the very heart of Le Citizen Hôtel, and the intimate space makes this unlike the vast, cold, somber hotel cafés you might have visited. No, this “neighborhood café” experience is different indeed, and that makes it the perfect blend for the area of Saint-Martin. À la prochaine, Le Citizen!

This hotel is a gem! It’s located in a cool neighbourhood, lots of interesting cafes and shops right on the doorstep. This is definitely one of my favourite hotels in paris! Coming from someone who has been to paris quite a few times, Le Citizen hotel is a great find for someone traveling with friends or a partner. The location is exactly what we were looking for: enough quiet and safe during the night, but fun, authentic and lively during the day! It was very nice to meet a lot of locals in the evening as Canal Saint-Martin is apparently a popular hanging out spot. Even though the hotel is a bit far away from all the big tourist attractions (15-30 min by metro), we found this as a plus, since the area was not crammed with tourists and expensive places, but good, reasonably priced local restaurants and shops. I would especially recommend the restaurant Hotel du Nord: great food and live music, right next to the hotel! The interior of the hotel room was clean but also cozy. It had all the necessities we needed: a fridge, a hairdryer etc. We read a lot about noise complaints in the reviews, but atleast we did not have this problem, with the earplugs we received from the hotel room we slept very well. Overall the hotel was a nice calm boutique hotel. Affordable, tidy, 24h reception, and welcoming service from staff. Special thanks to Chaim, who was very helpful and friendly to us all throughout our stay. Thank you Le Citizen!

The Le Citizen Hotel adjacent to the Canal Saint-Martin Is a small hotel with 2 rooms per floor and basically no lobby, however, the rooms were clean and comfortable, the staff very helpful and nice, and the location excellent. My friend, who is a Paris guide, lives in the neighborhood and recommended the hotel. Good restaurants are close. Sitting on the canal bank after a busy day is peaceful and very Paris-like. This is not a tourist area, thank goodness, but a Parisian neighborhood.
