Excellent hotel located right at the side of the Gare de Lyon. We stayed here as we got in late from Milan and were catching the Eurostar back to London the next day, the hotel has a tube stop where it is only a short ride to Gare du Nord for the Eurostar. The hotel was on the slightly pricier side but this is to be expected give its location. Check in staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke excellent English. Our twin room was small but as this was only for one night that was fine, the beds were comfortable, the hotel was quiet and the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean. The water pressure in the shower was great. We paid extra for breakfast and there was a huge selection, aside from the usual continental bread, meat, cheese and pastries, there was yoghurt, crepes, various cereals, many hot items such as eggs, potatoes etc. There was a good selection of very nice fruit juice and the icing on the cake, an actual kettle to properly boil water with actual English tea bags (my first proper cup of tea in two weeks). We would stay here again if in transit to somewhere.

I booked the Mercure for two separate one night stays for a train trip to Aix en Provence. I had previously stayed at the Novotel Gare de Lyon for a similar train trip in April but as the A/C was not very good was hoping the Mercure was better in that regard because of the warmer weather. It was. Upon arrival, I was upgraded to a Privilege room because of my gold Accor status. The room was small and the fridge wasn’t functional but I didn’t complain. When I inadvertently locked my belongings in the safe with an errant code, the technician was there in about 5 minutes which was impressive. The gym is small but nice. On my second arrival I was also upgraded to a Privilege room and this time the fridge was nice and cool. I was trying to be sly and fill my water bottle with chilled water from the fitness room but was clumsy and shattered the jug all over the floor. I went down and told the desk (because frankly there are cameras and they would know I had done it). The individual was more concerned about my safety than the mess I made which was again impressive. The only complaint I had about this room was that the shower head wouldn’t stay in place so it was a bit laborious to take a shower. Everyone was very friendly as they were at the Novotel. I wish I could combine the spaciousness of the Novotel room with the comfort of the Mercure, but if I had to choose, I would lean towards the Mercure.

Four stars??? You must be kidding!! I, my wife and our 11 years old daughter spent 4 nights in April in this hotel, and, unfortunately, it was not a very good experience. We stayed in a Privilege Room with 1 double bed and 1 sofa bed which was extremely small for 3 persons. Very little furniture in the room, not even a real wardrobe. We put our clothes in a sort of closet, this one also very small, and on a chair. The bathroom also very small and very uncomfortable. Still, I must admit the room and the public spaces were very clean. The breakfast was poor, both in quality and variety.
