“Beautiful period property enjoying a great location in old Rouen”

We had a lovely stay at this hotel. There were some limitations but they were definitely overshadowed by the positives. Pros: The property was beautiful and historic. The location in old town Rouen was fantastic. Everywhere in old Rouen was but a leisurely stroll away. The property also boasted a spa, an indoor heated pool, a restaurant, and a bar. The people at reception were polite, efficient and helpful. I would like to highlight Romane and Pierre at reception, who were always pleasant and helpful. The room was bright, clean and spacious. The room amenities were also good. The room service was up to snuff. The bar looked really good, but we didn't spend much time there. We did have dinner once at L'Aumale and the food was delicious. The service was also quite good. We did not avail of the spa services so can't comment knowledgeably on that aspect. The same applies to the pool. Cons: There were some elements which we felt could be improved upon. The biggest issue I would say, is that the breakfast spread is extremely limited and does nothing to elevate the stay in the hotel. Bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs and mushrooms sums up the lot. in terms of flavour, I'd say the pick of the lot were the mushrooms. The other options were disappoining. The cold cuts were limited as were the cheeses. I would go so far as to state that including breakfast was probably a mistake on our part, and frankly to serve up such a collection in Rouen, no less, is a travesty. There are plenty of cafés just a stone's throw away, which would offer a much better menu. I honestly can't understand why corners were cut to such an extent in this otherwise fine hotel. Despite this glaring shortcoming, I would like to point out that Natalie at the breakfast buffet was always courteous, pleasant and helpful. Those staying here in summer can avail of a fine and beautiful outdoor seating area. Frankly, the setting is excellent, and I would say that it is a missed opportunity for the managers not to set up small shelters, patio heaters and have the outdoor area as a cozy alfresco dining area. I cannot highlight how beautifully well located this hotel is, from all the major sights in the old city. And its beauty is also very understated. Again, it is a missed opportunity on the part of the manager not to offer some information about the property, its history, the two coat of arms seen on the front and the lovely facade near the entrance. Rouen is a beautiful city and whilst this is not directly relevant, staying here somehow seems to add to the charm of the city. I'd just skip the breakfast here.
