We stayed at Maison Du Monde in La Rochelle for two night at the end of October on our way back from staying in Cognac. This was our second stay in the hotel, having stayed the summer before. Our main reason for choosing this hotel again was that it was in an excellent location and very well decorated. We had booked the hotels ‘comfort rooms’ and as we were travelling with my parents in law, we had booked two rooms. Despite the rooms being of the same standard, one was a lot smaller than the other. We gave the larger room to my parents in law as my father in law gets claustrophobia. The bathroom in their room was quite large, however ours was tiny! The shower was so small you could barely turn around in it, and neither of us are large people. If our room was a comfort room, I would hate to see the size of a ‘cosy’ room! Breakfast at the hotel was very good and the selection of hot and cold food was great. It was nice that they made an effort to provide me with a high quality gluten free bread at breakfast. I had emailed ahead to see what they had that I could eat. Overall, I would probably stay at the hotel again, however I might also look for a hotel with more communal space or a bar area, especially when staying with others. If you want a centrally located hotel, this is a great option with a very close, reasonably priced car park.

We had a very good experience before we arrived with the front desk staff. Their communication was excellent. The hotel is in a good location for the old port and the town. Parking is available close by in the Vieux Port Ouest car park (park at the left end towards the harbour towers). It’s about a 3 minute walk to the hotel. We received a decent welcome from the front desk staff and our rooms were available before the 3pm check in time. The ground floor and first floor breakfast room are very well appointed and provide a welcoming environment. Going upstairs to the rooms, it goes downhill a little bit. Our rooms were ok but one room only had a bath with no shower, and the other room had a shower and the most slippery shower tray ever, so take care!! No fridge in the room which would have been an advantage. Hotel is dog friendly; let them know your pooch is coming and you’ll get a dog bed and water bowls in your room. Front facing rooms suffer from street noise below, but double glazing keeps the noise to a minimum. The breakfast was plentiful and lots of choice. However, the breakfast staff were very indifferent and almost unwelcoming. They spent most of the time chatting between themselves in the kitchen area. Overall the hotel was ok but the lack of interaction from the staff really let the place down. A more attentive attitude from the staff would have made the hotel totally different and would have made me want to return.
