Room: The room was very clean and spacious - the shower room could do with a facelift but that did not bother us, as we had hot water and room service every day. Food: The food was delicious and I loved the themed days. They have an a la carte restaurant on Thursdays and that happened to be the day of my husband's birthday, so we were given a complimentary meal and they made the evening very special. Staff: The staff (and locals) speak fluent English and are just the most beautiful people that reinforce the "Smiling Coast" narrative. They were all friendly, helpful, kind and fun. Location: The resort is about a 20min drive from the Senegambia strip and that was perfect for us as we preferred a more quiet and relaxing location, and taking a taxi was very inexpensive. The Ocean Bay Hotel is a few minutes walk along the beach. You may get approached , by the locals, as you walk along the beach to purchase goods - the people are very polite and I enjoyed talking to them and supporting them by purchasing the fruit boxes, smoothies and gift items. We travelled with Tui and did two excursions with them - the first was visiting Kunta Kinteh island - what an amazing experience, but not for the faint-hearted, there is a lot of walking and hustle and bustle catching the ferry with the hundreds of locals travelling to work. Our guide Modou was brilliant and so informative. We were lucky enough to have him on our second excursion to Fathala Wildlife Reserve, which is across the border in Senegal. Make sure you purchase the cashew nuts from the ladies selling on the ferry, they are delicious and will keep you going on the long journey. We also visited the monkey park 'Bijilo', which was a short drive from the hotel. The taxi driver will wait for you and take you back (around £12). The entry fee is £2.00 but I recommend having the guide take you around for an extra (£6.00) they know the monkeys well and can help with feeding. We also visited Kachikally Crocodile Pool, which was another great experience. There is poverty in the country and it is up to you if you want to stay in the resort and just relax or go out and experience all aspects of The Gambia.
