After 9 hours road trip we were fortunate enough to get a room in the busy Romantic Hotel. The style fits the surroundings, the staff is friendly and the amenities are (still) ok by todays standards. The wellness area is crowded but not overrun. The wall to wall carpeting and overall decor is somewhat "dusty" and out-of-date. Allergy prone guests beware, there are dogs everywhere. The weakness is clearly the pricey food. Sadly, traditional dishes were distorted by new world "Asian" components and lacked coherence and harmony. Unsavory. Disturbing. Disappointing. The Klumpp-Himmelreich wine saved our dinner experience. Next time we'll stay away from bizarre, elaborated selections and order Wiener Schnitzel instead.

We returned to the hotel after a wonderful stay 20 years ago. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to our previous experience. Generally this is a lovely hotel in a beautiful setting. The hotel gets many things right, however it fell down on a couple of important points. Firstly when we came down to breakfast on the first morning we were shown to an empty overflow area some considerable distance away from the main dining room where breakfast was being served. Sitting in this area would have involved carrying our breakfast up stairs and through the narrow reception area. The main dining area was not full therefore we asked to have one of the empty tables where we enjoyed an excellent breakfast. We were therefore surprised when we came down to breakfast the next day to be shown to the overflow dining area again when the main dining room was empty! Once again we had to ask to be seated in the main dining area. The second problem arose because we had pre-booked half board. We had stated that one of our party was a pescatarian however, we were all treated as non meat eaters. There was no choice and on the first night we were all served fish. The second night we asked what was on the half board menu to be told we all had a non meat pasta option. We chose not to have this and to eat off the a la carte menu. This too was disappointing because we waited almost one hour between our starter and main course. When we asked where our food had got to we were told another larger order had been placed ahead of ours by mistake! When the food arrived it was delicious but spoilt by the wait. When we raised our concerns with the hotel owner we received an apology and were offered a free bottle of wine. It would have been better if we had not had to complain though.

well, first of all, the place is lovely, great nature, solitude, calm. The hotel itself is rather old and historic, with some new parts (sauna and steam bath). The restaurant is old but atmospheric. The rooms are nice, old style furniture, but it somehow typical for the Black Forest region. We had a nice terrace overlooking mountains. The problem with the place is a service, or indifference towards hotel guests, at least we have experienced it this way. So many small things that shouldn't happen... No one is asking if you need help with the luggage, or they have asked, but actually AFTER we have already helped ourselves. Nobody explains you the things about spa, or, that there is actually no spa, but just one room for cosmetics and one for massage ( the treatments were excellent actually). No one explaines you things about the restaurant, or times for breakfast, dinner etc. The restaurant has a good reputation, that was one of the reasons to choose the hotel. Well, on our first evening, we had three courses each, and only one course was impeccable. The rest was either too salty, or just tasteless. On the second evening the dinner was excellent, so we were joking, was it a trainee who has cooked yesterday, or maybe a trainee is cooking today and the tired chef is off, that is why the meal is so much better. The service in a restaurant is uninspired, on both evenings the restaurant bill was wrong and we must claim it. The bill was changed without any explanation or excuse. My wife had her birthday during our stay and the hotel knew about that, because I had some questions concerning the menu on her birthday etc. Nobody ever bothered to wish her good luck, not to speak about birthday card in the room, or a cake, or a glass of wine or just anything acknowledguing that this is a special day for the guest. Upon leaving we have purchased some of the prodcuts they produce themselves, since the hotel has its own hunting forest and its own cheese diary. They managed to give us the wrong cheese, though the right name was written down. Actually we wanted to talk about it with the hotel staff, and to point out, that there were a ccouple of things that go a bit wrong. But no one has asked us, if we liked it there or not. So we have thought they just don't bother, what the guests are thinking. Our general impression was, that the hotel is in a kind of self discovery and hasn't decided yet what it would like to be, a modern house with great and friendly service, good cuisine and welcoming approach. Or just one of many old family hotels which just doing the way they have always done.
