This hotel is classy. The rooms are beautiful, but not large - it is an old structure after all. But the interior is all new and sparkling clean. I slept very well in the quiet room in the firm but cozy bed. The receptionist was efficient and very friendly. The buffet breakfast is superb - try not to overeat! Parking is a bit tricky, though. You can enter the pedestrian zone through the Schwabentor (a gate of the old city defenses) and stop to get your luggage to the hotel. But to park your car you need to get out of the pedestrian zone onto the busy Schlossbergstrasse (this is a bit complicated, so ask the hotel reception) and then you need to drive to the Schlossberggarage (the lower bridge once you enter the garage exit on your right; a bridge leads over the Schlossbergstrasse into the garage house). From there it is about a 5 minute walk back to the hotel. The walk is through a beautiful old street. Highly recommended!

(+) Hotel Zum Roten Bären is situated in the heart of Freiburg. The hotel itself is very old and traditional. It is claimed that the hotel is the oldest guest house in Germany and entire Europe! It was founded almost 9 centuries ago... The floors are covered with carpets. The hotel grounds are very nice decorated. A bottle of water is free of charge as a gift for guests. Breakfast is amazing! A few types of cheese, different ham and sausages, pastry, yoghurt, freshly brewed coffee, various teas, fruit salad, omelette, beacon, tasty bread, salmon, etc. There is also a restaurant at hotel grounds. (-) Bear in mind that check in is between 3 and 7 p.m. If you come between 7 and 10 you have to check in at the restaurant. And you may have a problem, if you arrive after 10 p.m. Surprisingly there was no wi fi in room 11. Double bed is not as most of the people expect to have but 2 single beds put together.

This historic hotel is ideally situated in the old town in close proximity to all of the historic sites, shops and restaurants. It is close to the city gate and not far from Schlossberg (castle hill). Paid parking is available in a lot within walking distance (tricky to find - use GPS). Our 'standard double room' was clean and very quiet. Breakfast buffet was typical. The reason for the 3 stars is that the hotel lacked charm. I expected more personality from the "oldest hotel in Germany". Also, there is no reception desk per se. Merely a person at a computer at the end of the rather sterile bar on the ground floor. There were no issues checking in or out, however, I did not feel welcomed at any point. I hesitated to engage in any conversation about the hotel or the city sites. I had my own agenda so this wasn't a big deal, but very different from the other hotels across the country. I do recommend the hotel for location and cleanliness.

“OK hotel in Freiburgs old town”

A decent 3 star hotel in good tourist location. The room was OK but very dusty and the carpet had some ugly stains. There was no AC, and the fan in the room was broken. A decent 3 star hotel in good tourist location. The room was OK but very dusty and the carpet had some ugly stains. There was no AC, and the fan in the room was broken. We did however get a new fan from the reception. Breakfast is adequate, but nothing special. Internet connection is very poor. The guy in the reception had a lot of attitude when we needed some help with the broken fan. Hopefully, he was only a summer stand-in.
