“Wonderful hotel”

“Disappointing”

I was so looking forward to staying here but it fell short on several levels. Started well with a friendly check-in. The receptionist told us our car would be valet parked and our luggage brought up to our room (I think she was going to do it herself). We were escorted to our room by another pleasant staff member but were led back out the building, across the car arrivals area, into a courtyard and another building entrance. We never found a direct internal route to the hotel common areas from our room and it was wet during most of our stay we had to run outside to get into the hotel itself - most inconvenient. I'm sure there was a direct route from our 'annex' area but the hotel is a maze of corridors and we never found it. The room was a good size, in excellent condition and the quality of the fabrics and furnishings were not in doubt. It was just bland and ordinary. We had booked a comfort room but it didn't feel like one and looked nothing like the web site photos (but then that is often the case isn't it). The bathroom however was quite luxurious but not overly large. Quite liked the sparkly grout! There were some sweet treats to welcome us and a welcome card signed by the owners. The towels were thick and large and the Etro toiletries turned out to be nice to use. We decided to go for a walk and returned about 2 hours later. There was no luggage in our room so we phoned reception only to be told they had forgotten to take the luggage out of the car! Hmmm. We then had to wait a further 20 minutes whilst it was retrieved and it was wet from the rain The a/c was not straight forward to use and there was some fresh air system too but when switched on it was like an industrial fan so we never used that. Fortunately the windows opened. The wifi was terrible. It took ages to connect to and once connected kept dropping out and reluctant to reconnect. The speeds were slow and downloading took for ever. Had far superior wifi in the most budget hotel brands compared to this. There was an in-room i-pad kind of contraption but was of no use because of the rubbish wifi connection. House keeping was as it should be. Breakfast was only okay, no wow factor. We'd come from the Marriott at Frankfurt airport and frankly that breakfast was just as good, maybe a bit better regarding the selection. The staff though were obliging and friendly. It was busy so we breakfasted in the Summer Restaurant which was nicely set. The next morning we had breakfast in the main restaurant which actually felt less pleasant. The hotel location was not so good. It was quite a walk the old part of Heidelberg and the castle and of course back again. Mind you the continual rain did not help and made it feel an even longer traipse. The other direction away from the old town looked a tad shady. Having said that, at least we were nearer to the centre than the Heidelberg Marriott (quiet far) and the Heidelberg Hilton. On leaving, it was good to see our car had been brought to the hotel entrance ready for our departure. We mentioned the poor wifi to the male receptionist who then went on at length to explain why it might have been so and we should have asked for assistance. That maybe so but should not have been necessary in the first place, (nor having to listen to a long list of reasons why it was not working properly). Did not find Heidelberg that appealing (rain might have had something to do with that!) and it's high ranking in must see sights in Germany puzzled. Thought Baden Baden a much nicer destination.
