We got a big room in the Stube Hotel across the road (is part of the Bärengroup. Room was clean and big and the bathroom was basic but all functioned well. We got one at the quiet part of the hotel with view on the mountains. The breakfast was good and the diner (we got half pension) was good for the price of this arrangement. The lady at the reception was friendly and helpful.

As passengers on a coach tour we were based at Hotel Baeren during a Black Forest visit. We had been advised that social distancing was being followed at this facility but this was not the case in the dining room. We were all closely seated together at very small tables to one side of the dining room and shouted at loudly by the owner/manager whenever one or two of us attempted to get our meals from the buffet. Given that several of us were single travellers we had no choice but to sit close to strangers. On our coach we were socially distanced so this was making it all a bit of a nonsense. Several German visitors were observed unmasked at the buffet tables in quite large numbers and the wait staff just shrugged when this was pointed out. However, the rooms were clean, spacious with plenty of towels and hot water. The church bells were not a problem once ear plugs were installed. Except for MSNBC there was not an English language TV channel available despite the Sky TV sign outside the hotel and only WiFi access was in the reception or dining room area. Food can only be described as institutional level of cooking with no options for vegetarians. Excessive amounts of salt in much of the pasta made it inedible. Tinned fruit was dessert most evenings. Given that most hotels have suffered during the lockdown period the staff and management were generally unfriendly. However, the owners seem to have a monopoly in the immediate area so not much incentive to improve the customer experience.

Only when you really need it. Cheap, that's good. But that's not good. There is no problem with basic services. The room is clean, the restaurant is good to eat, the staff is kind and helpful. Around 10-11 in the evening, however, everyone disappears, there is no one at the reception, all the doors are closed until morning, you can’t go for a walk or smoke, there’s nothing you can do. Sure, you get a key to the front door, but that’s not the real solution. The room is extremely simple. Bed, small table, wardrobe, old armchair, nothing else. There is a TV, but no carpet, for example. Balcony is nowhere to be found, air conditioning is not installed at all. Wifi only next to the reception, maximum 2-3 meters, no wifi in the rooms. This is no longer acceptable in 2020. You better pay a little more elsewhere and find a better hotel.
