So, we're on this "Slow Food" Label trip--scoping out restaurants in Europe that carry this label and/or belong to the CittàSlow movement. Waldkirch falls into the latter category, and Zum Storchen has the Slow Food label. We had just recently dined in another upscale Slow Food restaurant in Switzerland, shelled out a LOT of money for the "privilege" or pleasure or whatever the pretense, and then came to Zum Storchen on one of our discovery excursions. It was wonderful. An unpretentious place, very attentive and friendly owners, cool but cozy decor...and really reasonable=affordable prices for the culinary experience. My husband and I ordered different dishes so that we could taste test what we would each have ordered alternatively! (Does that sound confusing?) I swear, after tasting my husband's food, I could have ordered another round of an entree in lieu of dessert! The co-owner/server was knowledgable about the wine selection and recommended a nice one for us. The place is in an historical building, it is small inside with exposed structural beams. We didn't count exactly, but there were tables to accommodate maybe about 24-30 guests? I think the only drawback to the set-up here was the draft from the front door and a bit of smoke from the kitchen area. Otherwise, the seating afforded privacy and a nice ambiance. We spoke to the owner after we studied the restaurant's regular menu--she provided a lot of information that we wished had been included on a legend or in a descriptive part of the menu card. I was really impressed about what she had to say about their philosophy--that the emphasis was on local and seasonal--not necessarily "bio", since bio can mean that the product might be unseasonal and be leaving a large carbon footprint to get to the restaurant (like raspberries from the southern hemisphere in January!). Pretty cool, when you realize that you have to consider the whole picture, not just latch on to a trend. We didn't come to stay in the hotel, but I would love to try it sometime when we visit nearby Freiburg. I've read good things about it, and the comments are qualitatively consistent with the positive experience we had in the restaurant. Hope to go back soon.

“Fabulous room, breakfast and hospitality”

A wonderful family run establishment with room to move in these modern rooms. The head and foot of the beds even slant up or down. Breakfast included and eggs and bacon made to order right on the spot so they are always warm. Homemade jam, bread and pastries, daily for breakfast. Lovely view of cas… more

A wonderful family run establishment with room to move in these modern rooms. The head and foot of the beds even slant up or down. Breakfast included and eggs and bacon made to order right on the spot so they are always warm. Homemade jam, bread and pastries, daily for breakfast. Lovely view of castle from the sauna area of the top floor. We sat in lounge chairs that were there and enjoyed drinks while watching the sun set. Entrance is at the back off the alley as is the parking. A great place to stay!

“Visiting Waldkirch and Freiburg”

With friends we have visited this beautiful region near Freiburg im Breisgau. The food in the Hotel “zum Storchen” was excellent and not expansive. The wine was delicious. The rooms are modern. We have enjoyed this short trip in Baden-Wüttenberg.

This family run hotel/restaurant in the heart of the Black Forest region is Euro-modern. The owners value local sourcing and sustainability and have incorporated that into the refurbishment of this hotel. Wood floors and furniture are locally made and left natural colored. No carpeting or A/C in rooms contributes to environmentally friendly consciousness. Decor is crisp, clean, neutral. Bed is king sized, split with dual controls for raising and lowering head/foot. Bathroom has a frosted wall separating it from living area, nice open corner shower, and a countertop stone oval basin sink. Dinner was well prepared and presented with friendly smiles by owner/chef and wife. Breakfast offered many choices of cereals, meats, yogurt, cute little canning jars filled with fruit, a great kaffee/cappuccino machine, and eggs cooked to your order...and delivered to the table! If you want ‘luxury’ Zum Storchen is not for you. If friendly locals, clean, environmentally friendly decor, well prepared meals, and a genuine appreciation of your presence....this is the place in Waldkirch for you.
