My last stop during my mountain holidays has been at a place with an impressive history: Tannerhof at Bayrischzell, Germany. It was built in 1904 and it has always been a place known for naturopathy and its "back to nature" attitude. For generations until today the concept of a healthy life is the core philosophy of Tannerhof. This is why you can still find an extensive range of offerings like therapeutic fasting, gymnastics, various checkups, massages, deceleration cures etc. So I took the chance and had a full health checkup which I never seemed to have the time for when being home. Also, there are wellness options like sauna and massages which are to die for. Deceleration is another guiding principle at Tannerhof. This is why you won't find television nor WLAN at the rooms which I found to be very refreshing. And not just that: my so called "Turmzimmer" has been an absolute delight. Everything was made out of wood and through my huge window and balcony I was able to enjoy a panoramic view over the mountains and sorrounding forest. And I have been very excited about the food when I found out about the food philosophy at Tannerhof: there is one 4 course menu each evening and everything is 100% local and organic. And one thing I found to be especially impressive: 3 days a week there is a vegetarian menu for everyone due to sustainability and health reasons. Also, it has been no problem at all to order a full vegetarian diet for the whole time I stayed there. And the food truly turned out to be one of the highlights of my stay. Although it has been healthy indeed, it didn't taste like that if you know what I mean ;) That has been haute cuisine on a high level and you may take a look at the pictures to get an idea. Not to mention the breakfast. Oh, the breakfast! I guess I never found more variety of even vegan options at an breakfast buffet. I just couldn't stop myself each morning and people must have been thinking that I was getting breakfast for two.. To wrap it up: those days at Tannerhof have been just perfect for contemplation, its beautiful nature and surroundings and to recharge batteries. To top it all, the amazing quality of the food made me feel like I've nourished my body as much as my soul during my stay.

Our second stay - 14 days in total, 10 days liquid fasting and 4 days of gentle re-introduction of solid food. The place is run in the 4th generation, over the years it has moved from a sanatorium / clinic style place to something more akin to a hotel. People who are fasting have come here for many years, fasting is good for you and most people who fast are not actually overweight. There are two fasting options: 1000 calorie per day (liquid and solid food) or liquid fasting only (which gives you all the nourishment you need but you only take liquids for the time of the fast). There is a comprehensive (free) program for fasters and non-fasters which includes aqua gymnastics, thera band exercises, Pilates, Yoga, Tai chi, breathing exercises, stretching, guided walks (some not for the faint hearted), Nordic Walking, sauna and swimming pool. In some of hose classes you will get to know muscles in your body you have never felt before - great fun. There are lots of massages (excellent therapists) on offer for which you pay. There are two doctors on site to support the fasters, we felt that we had excellent support. The liquid fasting is a bit like a retreat, your body is at rest while you are active. The good thing: you will not feel hungry if you 'indulge' in the regular - three times per week intestinal cleansing (which may not be to everybody's taste - do your research). For regular eaters there is a restaurant which offers a stunning range of food. The place may not be right for everybody: there are no TVs in the room, WLAN is very, very slow and not available in all places, there is not much to do in Bayrischzell once you have been hiking. The Tannerhof is not a glamorous spa hotel, the bathrooms are functional. it's back to nature in a simple and quiet environment. They are not trying to compete with more luxurious offers - hence my advice: do your research. The Tannerhof looks like a small village with rooms distributed across two main buildings (connected) and a collection of smaller huts and wooden towers. If you stay there - well, you have a bit of a walk to get to the dining room, the massage, the swimming pool, the sauna - we stayed in he main buildings, we didn't want to take the risk to walk in the rain after a treatment. One thing I would not do again: come during the summer holiday period, there were a number of children (not a problem) - but their overindulgent parents who failed to control them. The staff are the friendliest people you could meet - nothing is too much trouble. In summary: check whether it is right for you - if it is, you will have the most wonderful time here, if it is not, you'll spend your time looking for stuff that's not there. We have come back refreshed, relaxed, fit - and we shall most certainly return. One additional point: the doctors speak English, some of the therapists speak a bit of English - but the exercises are done in German. You can follow by watching other people but you are not getting the full benefit. This is not an international multilingual resort.

“THE place to go to relax”

Me and my husband went here for two nights and came back really relaxed! Wonderfully nice people and delicious food! We stayed in one of the towers, on the third floor. Wonderful view, but no WiFi, no radio and you have to walk to the main building. We appreciated this - it's nice to have some fres… more

Me and my husband went here for two nights and came back really relaxed! Wonderfully nice people and delicious food! We stayed in one of the towers, on the third floor. Wonderful view, but no WiFi, no radio and you have to walk to the main building. We appreciated this - it's nice to have some fresh air after all that lovely food - but if it's raining it might not be quite so romantic... But there are also rooms in the main building, maybe even some with WiFi... But there is WiFi in the main building, also in the reading room which has lovely sofas! We booked half board, but actually it's 3/4 board as there's a small buffet for lunch which is included. Perfect! Apart from the hotel there's not that much to do - again, perfect for a relaxing weekend, but maybe not everyone's cup of tea...
