“Spectacular location; great experience!”

I have to admit that this one surprised us: we booked it simply because it happened to be on the way to Vienna. We genuinely had no idea that it was located in an incredible renovated castle with spectacular views over the beautiful city of Passau. Wow! Our room was... well... original, with nooks and crannies galore (which the kids loved, of course!) and the food was copious and delicious. Of course, staying in an medieval mountaintop castle has its downsides - the walk to the old town (and, particularly, the return) is a bit strenuous with four young kids and, bizarrely, the most direct path has rather limited opening hours. But if you are in relatively good shape, this 10-15 minutes of exercise is a small price to pay for such a unique hostel experience. Definitely one to return to.

“Excellent”

We booked a family room after joining the DJH, and wanting a couple of days break at the end of summer. The accommodation was excellent. We were in room 21, a family room with an en-suite shower and toilet. This made it a lot easier with a five year old. The room was very large with a table and windows looking out over two sides. Even though the days were very warm the room stayed cool due to the thickness of the walls. The location of the Youth Hostel was spot on. A bus runs up from town, making the return journey easier, and the walk into Passau (At the moment via the road due to storm damage on the usual path) only took about 15 minutes. The internet was only available in the entrance, but was good and fast. On the first night we walked to the Inn about 1km down the road for food, and were impressed by the portions. There is also the Oberhaus restaurant around the corner from the DJH, and the Youth Hostel itself serves evening meals. The breakfast was plentiful and varied, on a par with many decent midrange hotels. The aspect that really sells the Youth Hostel is the setting. This is high quality. The castle surrounds you, and is a very distinctive place to stop. Outside the Youth Hostel is the wooden bridge into the main part of the castle, where the museum is cheap (only five Euros) for a very varied and well presented set of exhibits. It also gives access to some stunning views. The staff at the Youth Hostel were helpful and friendly. The only slight thing we noticed was the lack of a self catering kitchen, but this is not a fault with the Jugendherberge Passau, more our expectations after stopping in YHA in the UK. I would highly recommend this DJH Passau.

Average Service, our room was a little hard to find in the castle. No Lifts and our room had a huge number of medieval steps. Once in the room, it was great, while a large group room it was divided into section. Excellent views and an amazing place to stay in. On top of a huge hill, very difficult climb after a walk around the city.

Location's great right next to the castle of Passau. You need to make an effort to walk up to the hostel, but it's worth it. Location's great right next to the castle of Passau. You need to make an effort to walk up to the hostel, but it's worth it. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk from the old town to the hostel and same back. WLAN only works right next to the reception, which is really uncomfortable. Breakfast is good for a Youth Hostel. Staff could be nicer sometimes, but its all clean and there's everything you need. Dorm rooms feel a bit cold due to the massive stone walls.
