“Good stay”

Decent hotel for short stay on business. Not many options in this area anyway. The restaurant is good and so is the service. COVID guidelines are strictly followed. Parking available. Breakfast is decent. Vegetarian options available. Staff are courteous.

I have mixed feelilngs about this hotel. Our room, a “Balance”, was worthy of a five-star rating. It felt less like a hotel room and more like being at home. The very large bed was extremely comfortable and the special lighting made the room very attractive. The window kept out the street noise; to keep out the mosquitos we kept it closed during the night, which however caused the room to get rather warm as there is no air conditioning. The staff was friendly in that over-confident German sort of way, except for the breakfast waitress who was, well, different. The lobby, elevator, and hallways were on the shabby side and have seen better days. Of course it’s quite expensive to renovate an entire hotel, but it wouldn’t cost too much to repair the carpeting in the elevator, which was frayed and bunched up. We ate a good dinner outside in the pleasant garden, and breakfast with its large selection of dishes was in the sunny dining room. There is free parking on the hotel’s premises. There is a small fitness room with a few pieces of cardio equipment and a multi-station weight machine. There are two pools; an unheated outside one in the garden, and a heated inside one. The bathing areas are OK but lack charm. We were however disappointed that the sauna was not heated when we got there about 19:30, despite having been told on the phone that it would be open until 21:00 and the hotel’s brochures also stating the same. We decided not to say anything to the management because by the time the sauna would have been heated up, we would have missed dinner. I would not however be interested in staying here for more than one night. Also upon settling the bill the next morning the receptionist was not very thankful for our business. In general this seems to be an older hotel which has been partially renovated (at least the Balance rooms are). The room with half board was about €220, which is really more than enough to spend considering its small town location.

We stayed in this hotel, since it is very conveniently located along the A3, being on our way to (and from) Hungary. The check in went alright, however, after having gone all the way to the room with the luggage it turned out the key did not work, first irritation. The dinner during our first night was nothing special, and relatively pricey, hence for the other evenings we choose to go to Passau (for a good Italian restaurant, with the 20km trip being more than worth it). The rooms are very full, a bit old fashioned, dark wood Bavarian style. Rooms were clean, but as said the net space was limited. But no air conditioning, which during our stay (with outside temperatures above 30 degrees), led to bee hot rooms, only cooling down somewhat by the time you had to get up again. This did not help a decent sleep. The breakfast was very good, comprehensive, with all biological products. However, all the tables were reserved, apparently for guests that had booked an all-in arrangement (the hotel is to some extent a spa/kurort). This reservation scheme left us, every morning scramble for a non reserved table, often in the dark end or against a wall or pillar. What however shocked us beyond comprehension was the rudeness of one of the staff, the lady attending the breakfast. We had, the night before, borrowed two spoons to enjoy some fruit in our rooms, and the next morning we wanted to return these by placing the spoons on the table with the other used cutlery. However, behind us we heard a loud and repeated command: “liegen lassen”, or “don’t touch it”. More like a military command than anywhere near a decent customer friendly approach. Well we’re not in the least interested to take the cutlery, but just neatly returned the borrowed spoons. Why such a treatment. I have never in my life experienced this attitude before, and this was not the only negative observation related to this member of the staff. Throughout our breakfast this lady turned out to remain unfriendly, making us stick to an unwritten protocol, and it really had a negative impact on what could have been a very nice breakfast. Overall: rooms are clean, bit aged, and too much stuff in there. And no air conditioning. The dinner is fine, nothing special, helpful if you don’t want to travel, the breakfast is very good, but you have to endure a rough and unfriendly treatment.
