Very comfortable stay and friendly welcome. Despite proximity to train line was surprised how quiet it was. Enjoyed my meal in the Italian restaurant in the building and tasty breakfast next day, Handy for station.

I recently returned from a Harry Shaw coach trip to the Rhine which included staying at the Weiland Hotel in Lahnstein for 7 nights (3 Aug - 10 Aug 2018). We didn’t get there until after 10.00pm so we just wanted to get to our room and settle in for the night. There is no meal at the hotel when you arrive but Richard our coach driver tipped us off so we had something on route. We were very pleasantly surprised to find that we had been given a large 3 bed room with a 4 poster bed and a single bed, a very large triple glass fronted built in wardrobe,TV, Free Safe, hair dryer and ensuite (Room 210 which is above the main entrance on the second floor and face’s the railway). I would give this room 8 of 10 the only thing missing was tea making facilities and A/C but to be fair it was unusually very hot and very close at night, if a hot drink is a must in your room i would advise you bring a travel kettle. Once we closed the windows it drowned out the sound of the railway but because it was so very hot having the windows open was the only form of ventilation, but most nights i just turned off and slept through it. We didn’t get to use the main dinning room on the ground floor whilst we were there, it looked like they had just built a new dinning area on the first floor with was on two levels, so beware if you are not steady on your feet. There is a nice room just off reception were you can get drinks but they are from vending machines, there is also vending machines in the reception area to get cold drinks and small bottles of wine, there is no bar, so most evenings we went out of the hotel for a drink, if you turn left out of the hotel and go under the tunnel there is a nice cafe over looking the river, most of us from the coach party started meeting here in the evening for a drink but one night they said they had no beer but served it to the locals, so moved to a nice Italian restaurant further along the river, who welcomed a coach load of business with open arms, sitting outside with a cold drink, with the river in front of us and new friends who could ask for more.(If you turn right out of the hotel and go under the tunnel it is at the end of the carpark up a ramp). Breakfast was in the form of a continental breakfast, cereals, cob’s with various meats, and boiled and scrambled eggs, and toast, on your table every day was a pot of coffee, but if you ask they will bring you a pot of tea. Evening meal was 3 courses, first being soup, second course was a help yourself, with hot food and cold food, a different main course was offered each night, pork one night, chicken the next, fish the next etc, third course was generally a very small fruit cocktail desert with was ok but the first day we were given a banana? There is no free water or tea and coffee on the table with the evening meal, but a member of staff will take an order from you for a drink at your table (Wine, beer, soft drinks, water etc) at a cost. Other than when we were offered mushroom soup and some meat that night covered in mushroom’s which I personally do not like I found all the meals quite nice, my only advise to the hotel would be could you label your food (English & German) so those that are a bit more fussy about what they eat know what is being served without having to ask other people what it was. Overall I found the hotel very clean and tidy my only dealing with the owner was asking about our safe which didn’t work, I spoke to room service first and they confirmed it was not working, she advised me she was too busy to deal with it that morning so i spoke to her son in the evening but it was never fixed, we found that the owners/staff were not as friendly as other hotels we have visited.The website said that there was free wi-fi but when a member of our party asked, they were told by the lady owner that Harry Shaw guests don’t pay enough. As many people have said before Lahnstein itself is not a picturesque town a lot of the shops were closed down, but if you turn right out of the hotel and turn right again there is as few cafe’s, ice cream parlour, and pub’s, but it is in a good location for a base to travel from. On our free day’s you can use the water ferry, or use the train, which we did and visited the city of Cologne, we changed trains twice which took about 90 minutes easy enough to do, tip you need to buy your ticket from an automatic machine on the station, the larger your group the cheaper the price was one person 42.50 Euro’s total, two person’s 54.00 Euro total, three persons 60 Euro’s total (price was now 20 Euro’s each) We found the town very quiet, it felt that most Germans had gone on holiday and were putting there towels on sun beds in some far away country annoying the Brits. As you leave the hotel entrance if you turn right and walk parallel to the railway you will come to a Netto, Big tip if you buy drinks beware there is a tax (Einwegpfand) which can be up to 25 cent added to each item you buy ie a bottle of cola 1.5 litres at 95 cents you pay 25 cent tax (1.20 Euro total) but if you buy 6 bottles of water 0.5 litres you pay 0.65 euros for all 6 bottles plus1.50 tax (2.15 euro’s total), but do not despair if you take all bottles back to the Netto stores there is a automatic machine on the left as you enter the store and you get your tax back as a voucher to spend in the store. For car or coach traveller a big tip make sure that you have some change on you as you have to pay to use the toilets on all service stations and that ranges from 50 to 70 cent’s per person, you will be given a credit note to get the money off items you buy in the shop. To sum up this holiday with Harry Shaw staying at the hotel Weiland, my wife and i had a fabulous time, Richard our coach driver was great giving us a running commentary on everything we saw, and made time to chat to us all. We are really enjoying getting into coach holidays and all the nice places we get to visit and the fabulous new friends we make along the way.
