This hotel is easy to find and is situated just outside the small quiet spa town of Bad Harzburg. (a 1 bed apartment there costs only 17,000 Euros). There is parking on-site or just outside on the street. There are steps and a ramp up to the reception and terrace area and a spiral staircase to most rooms, there is no lift. The hotel was built in 1968 and renovated in 2010 and there is a glass walkway joining the hotel to the restaurant through the pretty garden. The lounge is at the front of the hotel overlooking the street and has easy chairs and tables. It is not fancy but comfortable enough and the waitress brought our drinks there from the bar in the restaurant. Our first floor room overlooked the garden and had a large wardrobe, fridge, small table and chairs, a large mirror and a balcony with furniture. The bed had a foam mattress which we found comfortable, unlike the pillows. The bathroom was small but adequate with shower cubicle and shower gel and a wall-mounted hair-dryer with nozzle. Breakfast was taken in the dining room and offered a good variety of the usual continental breakfast items including a range of loose-leaf teas. I was a little confused by a display of mini-jars which turned out to contain cereals but only a mouthful of each (?). Hotel Restaurant Am Eichenberg, restaurant. Having travelled a distance we opted to eat in the restaurant rather than walk into town. The dining room is connected to the hotel by a glass covered walk-way and is a large carpeted room with a small bar in one corner and a biergarten outside. There were a few other diners, but the room lacked atmosphere. The starter of bacon and baked cheese in a thyme sauce with apple and honey was very nice, as was the main course of lake fish in curry sauce with rice and peas. However the weiner schnitzel was rather dry although the chips were good. Although two desserts were on the menu we were told they had none (!) but they then found two from the Candlelit dinner menu. When we asked for coffee we were told there was none (in a restaurant?), that the machine was off but when we persisted and the new waitress asked in the kitchen we were told there was 'only' filter coffee ….. We paid E64 including drinks. The waitresses were very nice and I felt sorry for the new one, she did her best.
