We had an appartment on the ground floor with a balcony during our stay in Wernigerode. The appartment was good, clean and well equipped. The accommodation is located a bit uphill, it's a 10-15 minutes walk to/from the old town. But therefore they offer an ample and free car park. Another advantage is that you can order fresh bread rolls for breakfast. Recommendable !

“Short break in the Harz Mountains”

The Villa Ratskopf is run by a hotel in town as separate apartments. Initial entry is by phoning the hotel who give you a code for the key lock so have your mobile charged! Details are by the front door. It is in a quiet residential area of Wernigerode. There is good parking and it is good value. The rooms are clean and spacious and our apartment 1 had a terrace with a seating area overlooking the town and green wooded hills. A good breakfast is prepared in the apartment block and served to your room. There was a small kitchen area and medium sized fridge so you can self cater if required. There aren't any other hotel facilities in the apartments like a lounge or bar but that didn't bother us. It is a 20 minute walk from the town centre and the apartments are up a hill for about 400 yards (thus the view!). However, there is the Citybus which runs every half hour until 1830 which stops both below and above the Villa thus saving you the walk. All buses in the area are free to those who pay tourist tax and get a small book which has a form at the front which needs to be completed. It's valid for your whole group. The town is well worth at least two or three days and has some wonderful old buildings, many restaurants and interesting shops. Try the Eselskrug pub on the way into town for good value food. It's close by the Harzquerbahn steam railway. You can hear the railway from the Villa and a ride on it is good although the ride to the top of the Brocken is a bit dear and all you see is pine trees until the very top. A trip on the train to Drei Annen Hohne then a walk back through woods and past a lake is good. Also a visit to the magnificent Schloss and a walk to the Kaiserturm are recommended.
