We stayed 1 night at the Apollo Palm at the end of an island-hopping trip and the hotel exceeded our expectations. We chose it because we had seen a lot of hotels with views of the Acropolis which we fancied, and this one seemed the best value in a good location. We opted for a Classic Double Room (one up from the basic Cosy Double which we noted had the bed against one wall which isn’t ideal if two of you) and were pleased with our choice. Our allocated room 311 (3rd floor) had sufficient space for a short stay, with an allocated place to put a good sized suitcase and further floor space for our smaller case. The bed was comfortable and the room was very peaceful especially considering the size of the hotel (48 rooms) and city location. The window looked out onto a central courtyard which was surprisingly “green” with climbing plants and had outside seating at the bottom. The room had a fridge and coffee machine and kettle. The fridge contained soft drinks (payable) and the bar list referenced complementary water but there was none provided. The room was beautifully cooled by aircon which we really needed as it was 35C in Athens at the time! Previous reviews have commented on the stained carpets. Our room carpet was certainly well worn but still clean and soft underfoot – it just had a join in an odd location. We did see a very stained carpet in a corridor area, but at the price we paid, I was very happy with the quality of what we received. The highlight of the hotel is the roof terrace – it really is stunning. Attractively decorated with cushions and sun umbrellas, there is a wonderful view of the Acropolis. We met friends for dinner and brought them back for a drink afterwards and they were very impressed too. It’s a great spot, although best once the sun has dropped as very hot in summer! Breakfast is also served up here and we went up about 9.30am and it was already about 30C and baking and guests were struggling to find shade (not quite enough umbrellas) although it wasn’t busy. We were also impressed with the breakfast buffet itself. Options ranged from scrambled eggs and another couple of hot items to a wide range of breads and pastries, selection of sliced fruit, cold meats and cheeses and salad items. There’s a hot drinks machine to make your own coffee etc. We really enjoyed the breakfast, especially as it was included in our room rate. In terms of location, this hotel is a pleasant 10mins walk from Monastiraki metro station, through lanes and pedestrian walkways filled with tavernas and smaller shops. Then it’s situated in a very quiet side street. The hotel staff are pleasant and were efficient at tagging out cases on our last day and keeping them, given check out was at noon, as we had an evening flight. The barman was also very nice in the evening. We would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a good value comfortable but peaceful base close to nice tavernas, who also wants to enjoy an impressive view of the Acropolis whilst having an evening cocktail or breakfast!
