A beautiful setting on a lovely beach. The accommodation is set over a wooded hillside and the walk down/uphill is not too arduous but would not be suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. There are however, golf buggies running a fairly regular service. The rooms are clean and the linen is changed every day, the beds are comfortable. The food is good quality, plentiful and has a varied selection. Not fine dining but fair for a 3/4 star hotel. There are several lovely places to sit and enjoy a drink. The swimming pools were not over populated as most guests made the most of the beach. The allocation of sunbeds to each room is really a bonus. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. However, the hotel is not 5 star, this is because there is no table service, it's all buffet in the main resturant, there is a resturant that has waiter service but this is an extra charge. Due to the wasps taking an interest in the food, most guests opted to eat indoors until 20.00. This put pressure on the seating availability indoors and queuing was the norm, both in the morning and early evening although generally for less than 15 minutes, but not a 5 star experience. The toiletries in the rooms are limited to mixed shampoo and conditioner and body wash. Just a few little changes would elevate the experience and the star rating.

We caught the last Tui flight out of Kavala after spending two weeks at Makryammos bungalows. The check in was ok, not much information given, no complementary drinks. There were one of two waiters helpful. We expected daily bottled water in our room, as there wasn't an on sight shop, we were told they didn't have time to build it this year! On our first trip into Thassos town, by taxi we bought 6 litres of bottled water for €2-50. We were in room 204, which was very nice, clean and tidy. The catering wasn't 5 star, instead of eggs fried to order at breakfast they batch cooked them and left them on a tray to congeal, although one day I actually had an egg freshly fried. The breakfast and dinner were not up to the star rating. We didn't venture very far, although we did go into Thassos town 3 times. The first by taxi, both ways,. Then we got the golf cart up to the gate and walked on the side of the road, which took us 20-25 minutes, we did however get a taxi back! We didn't see any rubbish on the beach, thought it was a good idea to have same dinners every day. I had no problem following the shade from the parasol. I wasn't keen on dogs being allowed on the beach and I don't think they should have been allowed where people were eating, even if it was in the covered area outside.

Food very basic and drinks pricey Service from untrained inexperienced staff. Dire lack of information like pulling teeth to find out anything. The bungalows are nice but the cleaning is not up to standard half made beds crumpled pillows, bins not emptied including toilet paper one .. not good as you are not supposed to flush paper down the loos :( I have complained to travel company whose rep was useless Oh and you have a key for your pre designated beach chairs and it is your responsibility to unlock stack and lock the chairs back up again each day I loved the Peacocks that wander around, and although the beach was untidy the sea was clear. I would not return to Thassos however

As many already have commented, this is NOT 5* experience, location is stunning, but beach is not cleaned and does not resemble the pristine photo on their website. Check in was impersonal, waited ages for our luggage to arrive at our room, so couldn't head to beach as we'd normally do. We had asked for an upgrade, but fobbed off twice. Eventually told no upgrades available until 2 days before departure date, this was not true, overheard reception offering a couple the next day a free upgrade, the same receptionist who had been surly with me, was complete opposite with this young couple. We also asked to be moved to a more accessible room, as we didn't want to rely on the golf buggy transport. We'd requested this in advance of our stay, but clearly no-one made any effort to accommodate that simple request. Just felt like they were doing us such a big favour at their inconvenience. Restaurant staff were overworked, as mentioned, hard to get a table inside to avoid wasps and inconsiderate smokers!! Can't believe in 2025 there are still no designated non/smoking areas outside. Even trying to have a coffee outside it was impossible to avoid people lighting up, really does spoil it for us. We didn't like being allocated a sun lounger, wanted to choose based on shade, wind direction, if anyone was smoking by us etc. Finally, whilst some areas have clearly had money spent on them, mid section by adult only pool was neglected and in need of some TLC. The sand was not clean across the beach, discarded children's toys clearly left behind, lots of bits of rubbish and debris, lots of plastic being washed ashore, literally ignored by staff, but being collected by not only us, but other guests. Really not good enough! No, we wouldn't recommend, no, we wouldn't return even it there weren't any wasps.

Just returned from a week at makryammos bungalows, stayed as a family of 5 adults in 2 rooms. One of the nicest settings we've stayed at, the rooms were a good size and spotlessly clean, linens changed daily, no complaints with housekeeping. The bungalows are spread up a steep hillside, we were in one of the higher levels and counted 500 steps to get down to reception/restaurant/beach level, so not for faint hearted and a real pain if you forgot something in your room! Paths are cobbled/uneven with no hand rails on steep parts, lighting was lacking on some of them. We've stayed in a few 4 and 5 star TUI hotels, and can confirm what others have said, this is NOT a five star hotel, purely because the service, hospitality and catering are lacking. Such a shame because the hotel buildings and setting are just lovely. Simple things - a welcome drink on arrival was not offered. Our first meal in the restaurant- nobody meeting and greeting new guests despite the restaurant manager being on the floor. No replenishment of water in the room fridge each day. A hotel manager being visible and checking in with guests occassionally. Just little touches that make all the difference. Location - beautiful but remote, no onsite shop to buy any forgotten items, not even toiletries or suncream, def no snacks or drinks for your room. Thassos town is a 45min walk away, or a taxi is 10E each way. We hired a car for two days which was definitely worth it to see island. Food standard was OK, you won't starve but don't go expecting gourmet food, it's a basic buffet and little variation. Definitely NOT 5 star food. Table situation is a little chaotic if you want to dine inside and wasp free. There are maybe 3 or 4 tables that comfortably seat 4 people, 5 at a squish. Weirdly these larger tables have 6 seats round them, but it would be nigh impossible to fit six on them and they only ever had 4 place settings on them, each meal we had to catch someone's attention for extra cutlery for a 5th person. All others are tables for 2 (each have 4 seats round them). In a 5 star setting we have always had staff recognise us after a few meals and our need for a larger group table anticipated, which makes for a much pleasanter dining experience. One night we had to sit at 2 separate tables which is a shame. Drinks.... juice and tea/coffee included at breakfast, nothing with evening meal. We were shocked to discover that a single small 250ml bottle of coke/Fanta etc cost 4 euro . I refuse to spend 20 euro a night for us all to have one small soft drink, that's ridiculous, I would have had a 140E coca cola bill by end of week!. 1L of still water was 3.5E, 750ml bottle of sparkling water was 5E. You can imagine how much alcoholic drinks were, and this was same in all the bars. You are not permitted to consume any food or drink by the pools that hasn't been purchased at their bars. There was no evening entertainment at all, which we knew before we went and isn't a problem for us, but nothing to do other than sit drinking in expensive bar. I totally understand that it was last week of season and staff must be exhausted, but on checking out and settling our room bill, nobody bothered to ask if we'd enjoyed our stay, or thanked us for choosing their hotel, or wishing us a safe journey home. I've stayed at 3 star hotels where we've experienced much better hospitality and care tbh. The holiday ended on a bad note when we were told we'd have to lug 5x 20kg cases and all our hand luggage down the 500 uneven steps to the coach pick up point, because their staff don't start till 8am (and we had to be ready waiting for pickup at 7.55am). Really?????! You must have had an entire season of guests leaving at the same time each week for a routine scheduled flight, and not once considered you might need staff to start a little earlier to collect luggage from rooms? So would I return? Probably not, based on the poor service level and lack lustre catering in comparison to other 5* hotels we've stayed in. For the setting on a stunning beach and lovely rooms, yes. I hope next season the hotel and Tui can make just a few improvements to turn this stunning setting into a truly 5* experience that justifies the cost. Please do note as a 5* rated hotel you must pay an additional 15E per room, per night, in tourist tax. This is not included in the package deal price and must be paid direct to hotel. In my view it is not a 5* hotel so it was a little galling to have to pay the 5* rate!
