“Nice stay”

Nice hotel, very close to the center of the town. Needs improvement in the common areas (outdated). Excellent and spacious room with great balcony and view. Very clean. Friendly staff. Breakfast catered to your needs. Parking at the side of the road with no problems. Value for money.

This hotel is slightly removed from the center of town, where the 3 major hotels are located. This hotel is slightly removed from the center of town, where the 3 major hotels are located. This makes it quieter and much easier to find parking, but does involve a 5 minute walk uphill to get back to your room. It is still convenient, being only 5 minutes from the plaza and directly across the street from the main church. Rooms were comfortable, clean and the AC worked well. It is close to cafes, snack shops, and convenience stores.

For various reasons that all should be doing...) or you may have a surprise the next morning... No water!! Proximity to the town hall square of Sparta where there are great places to eat and shop! WiFi is okay.

“Brutalist icon or Concrete block?”

Sparta is initially not an attractive town, being mainly concrete blocks of flats.  However, the town is situated below a range of mountains giving very impressive views from most places.  Our hotel was itself rather odd.  Looking at Trip Advisor, there are two schools of thought.  It is either 1. a fine example of the 1960 Brutalist school of architecture, still apparently owned by the architect, or 2. a bit of a dump with plain concrete ceilings and balconies.  I was somewhere in between but mostly on the positive side.  The room was large and light with a huge corner balcony.  The TV was tiny and old school with no English language channels.  Everyone agrees though that the staff are lovely and Dimitri’s recommendation to go to a local restaurant owned by his friend was a great one.  Breakfast was a bit of a let down but functional.  I believe that this hotel is really quite cheap and is perfectly good as a basic place for a couple of nights.  Ancient Sparti (once you’ve found it tucked behind the football stadium) is well worth exploring - free and well signed.  There is a big ancient castle complex above Mystras a few miles out of town that would be worth exploring if you were there for longer (€12 I think).  All in all I really enjoyed staying in Sparta though might go a bit upmarket if I went again.   Pros: Good location, nice staff, ‘interesting’ architecture, cheap Cons: ‘interesting  architecture doesn't suit everyone.  Needs sprucing up a bit.
