“Great place to stay”

The hotel is located at the mouth of the Rio Dulce River next to Lake Izabal. it presents you with great opportunities to choose a way of relaxation ... we chose a river trip to Livingston. Upon return, the hotel equipment, service and kitchen allowed us to have a good rest.

We had a lovely time here, relaxing and reviving ourselves afterburner busy visit to Livingstone. Rooms are comfortable and clean, staff are very friendly, and patient and kind with my dodgy Spanish the carpaccio of beef is absolutely excellent. !

The rooms seems fresher, cleaner and the hotel overall well more prepared for guests. it is close to the Castle of San Felipe de Lara which is worth a side trip. The hotel can arrange a private boat shuttle from their dock.

“A bit dated, but one of the nicer hotels in the area”

I stayed here for 3 nights over New Year in December 2025. I chose this hotel as many of the other hotels in the area looked either extremely basic or like a jungle lodge. This one looked the most like a 'hotel', in that rooms were accessed from a corridor rather than from outside, and the grounds weren't surrounded by jungle. The location isn't super fantastic, which I found to be the same for most of the hotels in the area. The hotel is located inside a gated community, and the walk from the gate to the hotel reception is a good 5-10 minutes. The hotel is located outside of San Felipé, I did walk from the hotel to San Felipé once and it was around 20 minutes, but I wouldn't do it again. San Felipé is a bit of a sleepy village, but Rio Dulce is bigger and has more going on. To get to/from Rio Dulce, the 'colectivo' (i.e. chicken bus) stops at the complex gate and goes every 30 minutes, the last one of the day being at 6 pm. The tuk-tuks aren't allowed to take passengers to San Felipé, but taxis can and they can go through the gate and take you to the hotel reception, and from central Rio Dulce it costs 50 Quetzales. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful, but during my whole stay I only came across one who spoke some English. The corridors and my room smelled a bit 'old', like the sort of smell you'd have in summer camp dorms. My room was clean, and I didn't see one insect inside it during my whole stay. It was somewhat dated, with a few scuffs on the walls and floor here and there. The beds were a bit firm but ok. There was air conditioning that worked well (I had a slight issue at the beginning where the AC wouldn't switch off, but a staff member sorted it right away), and a ceiling fan which only stayed on when the light was on. There was a fridge with a minibar, and unfortunately the fridge was noisy. I did look to see if I could switch it off, but there was ice buildup at the top and I knew if I switched it off if would melt and leak everywhere. The bathroom was clean and there were provided toiletries, and the bath-shower combo worked well and the temperature was stable. The grounds of the hotel are very nice. There's a pool with a water slide, and a jacuzzi. There are pedal boats and kayaks you can hire to go on the lake, I'm not sure if it costs and if so how much. There was wifi throughout, though you had to log in to separate ones for different areas of the hotel. It mostly worked well, with the exception of one morning where it was down for the whole hotel. Breakfast is not included, but I did use the hotel restaurant every morning. It's located outside on the lake shore, but it's covered from the elements. The selection was good and was reasonably priced, and refillable coffee comes with every breakfast. The food quality was good. I did look at the dinner menu and the selection looked reasonable, but I never went. There are filtered water coolers dotted around the hotel grounds. Overall my stay was good, but if I go to the area again I'd probably try to stay in Rio Dulce for the convenience.
