Didn’t know what to expect when booking this hotel, a former garrison for a military barracks. But it was a good value, much cheaper than staying in Amsterdam, and in a good location, only an 8 min walk from the train station, making it a base for exploring both Leiden and other cities in South Holland like Delft, Utecht, The Hague, etc. The small hotel is next to a 17th century city gate, and a small Park de Put with a statue of Rembrandt and a reconstructed windmill. The red brick exterior didn’t seem like much but the inside was a nice surprise with an open and bright lobby with a sitting area and dining section across from a bar. An open stairway leads to rooms on the 2nd floor, but mine was on the first floor past hallway doors next to the bar. There’s a spartan, barracks feel to the rooms but with modern decor and furnishings. The double bed was large and comfortable. The room was spacious with a high ceiling and tall windows, and a sink plus large shower hidden behind a partitioning wall. The toilet was behind a door and separate from the sink/shower area. Breakfast, which I didn’t try, is offered for a charge. They also offer small bites and lunch selections, like a tuna melt sandwich, which was simple yet tasty. There are also good cafes and restaurants within easy walking distance. A nice touch was offering a free drink from the bar when skipping housekeeping service for a day. Staff were friendly and accommodating throughout the stay. Didn’t expect it but really liked the time spent at the Boutique Hotel D’Oude Morsch in Leiden.

“Short stay”

Really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. Staff were very attentive. It is located within a short walk from the station and is close to all local amenities. Breakfast was excellent. Would definitely return when we are next in Leiden.

Set at the entrance to the old town, this hotel is in a terrific location! Set at the entrance to the old town, this hotel is in a terrific location! Adjacent to a canal, a windmill, a small park, and a short walk to the center of Leiden ... these things made our stay in Leiden special. The rooms are eclectic modern but perfectly comfortable. The on-site, small restaurant offered just the right dishes for a breather from wandering the incredible canals and streets of this charming town. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom spacious and clean, the towel-warmer was handy for drying a few hand-washables. The only reason I couldn't give it 5 stars is that the small park which the rooms look out over draws young people at night. No issues, just some smoke and conversation coming in the open window.
