Hotel De Koningshof

“A friendly, family owned property with close access to the beach. Definitely on my 'next time' list.”

We were visiting friends in the area, and were new to this hotel. We stayed just one night. The front desk personnel were friendly, both before we arrived when we were assured of check-in until 9:30, and the entire stay. The breakfast was lovely, and served to us by friendly staff. The hotel and the grounds were amazingly clean. And the property sits just behind a dune, walking distance to the North Sea and beaches. We were rather off season, but I would imagine this hotel is booked throughout the summer! English was spoken, but I also heard Dutch and German. We will consider this hotel again when we are in the area!

“Lovely stay.”

Stayed here last October. Great family run hotel with well facilitated rooms. Found the hosts very friendly and most helpful. They spoke perfect English. We had bikes, which he was more than happy to accommodate. The room was spacious with lots of nice touches. Would stay again if in the area.

Stayed at hotel de Koningshof for one night on last leg of a cycling tour and being only 30 miles from the Hook of Holland ferry port ideal for catching the ferry the following morning after breakfast. It’s a bit of a walk inland from the proverbial big (hotel) beasts on the seafront. Rooms spacious and clean. The owner was very affable and we were able to store our bikes securely in the garden. Breakfast usual fare of cold meats and cheese. Certainly not a “bargain”place to stay but then Noordwijk seemed quite pricey.

Koningshof is a reasonably priced alternative in a popular little seaside town that seems to be bursting with hotels and B&B's. It is a family run establishment so it has a nice feel to it that perfectly fits the surroundings. The service is very friendly and helpful, and everything about the hotel is quite clean and neat, and also in good condition. This goes a long way in gaining my approval. While well-maintained, the building is an old one though, and has some limitations you will want to consider. Consider also that this is a review for one of the more peculiar room types, which is the one-bed with a separate bathroom. The bathroom is very narrow and you have to somewhat squeeze past the toilet to get to the shower space. It is very small in general, and the ventilation can not really keep up, so you will mist up the whole place even during a short shower, which isn't comfortable, since you'll also probably leave your towel to dry there. There also isn't a faucet attached to the shower, so you can not really wash your hands until you are back in your room. This does not make for a hygienic toilet expedition. As for the bathroom being separate from the room, this was stated in the listing, and it is something I accepted to get a cheaper stay. It is a little disconcerting to wander in there in the middle of the night though, when it has other private rooms right on either side of it. This is especially due to the soundproofing not being particularly good. The stairs are noisy, and all the noise from the corridor also carries clearly into the room. You basically have to hope for the other customers to be the quiet sort, in order to have a peaceful time here. The ventilation in the small room is probably worse than the bathroom, and the air gets quite musty quite quickly. You have to rely on keeping the window open, which is fine late in the summer, but I imagine colder months might be an issue. Also, I could not imagine this place during +30C weather. Additionally, the bed is rather narrow, to the point where I almost fell off a couple of times when turning onto my side. These are for the most part things that can't be fixed without a huge renovation, but there are some small things that could be improved on. First, there are the toiletries. Even your average AirBnB will throw in some nice toiletries these days, but Koningshof still relies on a single soap dispenser for head and body, and an economy one-sheet-at-a-time toilet tissue dispenser. Easy to maintain and economic, yes, but they give the otherwise nice place a cheap feeling, and feelings matter in this business. Second, there is the breakfast, which is served in a curious format. There is a small "buffet" for cereals and such, but that is sort of a bonus, and the main breakfast is served as a set to you at the table. This consists of a small orange juice, a selection of breads and cold cuts with basic cheese slices, and an egg. There is also tea or coffee. Now, while table service like this as is a classy touch as a concept, I have to think of my friends and consider which ones would be able to eat which parts of this set breakfast. Honestly, many of them would leave most of this untouched, be it due to a vegetarian lifestyle, lactose intolerance or what have you. This set would have been fine in, say, 1990, but it doesn't pass muster in 2018. Also, I do have to consider what happens to the leftovers. I certainly didn't eat all the cold cuts, so what's done with the rest, that I may or may not have touched during my breakfast? Are they thrown away, or are they recycled for the next plate? This is a lose-lose situation, as it is either very wasteful or just basically forbidden from a food-hygiene standpoint. Reverting to a full buffet model would solve this issue easily. In any case, I would stay at the Koningshof again, because these people really do their best for you, but I would invest in getting one of the bigger rooms instead of the budget option.
